Default Turbo rebuild question???

I'm looking at buying a Huntley stage 2 BB turbo used off a guy here local. Anyone have a guess on the specs of this turbo? The turbo has a little bit of shaft play, but how much is too much? Also who does everyone recommend on doing a turbo rebuild?

Thanks all...

BB turbos cost big $$$ to rebuild.. Some of them aren't even rebuildable!!
Call various turbo shops and get a quote.

Most turbos have some play, especially when there is no oil in them. Excessive play is bad! You should be able to measure the side-to-side play.

Thanks. How much side to side would you say is bad? What shops do you suggest I call. Are there any on the east coast?

Hi por951turbo,
Buy it only if it is very very cheap.
Personally, there are things that
I would not buy used & a turbocharger
is one of them. Factor in the cost of
rebuild, you'll probably kill yourself
for not buying a new one in the first
place. Try contacting Innovativeturbo.com.
The've got some nice T3/t4 hybrids at very
good price. If you must have a KKK hot
housing, talk to them & see if they can
fit one for you.
Good Luck

Thanks for the reply. I am getting this turbo very cheap, and maybe cheaper if it needs a rebuild. Who does everyone recommend?

Hi,
How cheap is cheap ?
Check with Majestic turbo
what a rebuild will cause.
Please bear in mind a rebuild
for BB turbos is never cheap.
Find out the cost before you
go with the purchase.

Hi por951,
If you can, open up the
housing to makesure that
the turbine & compressor
blades are in good shape.
No chipping , fracture etc.

It may not need rebuilt as it's only about 2 years old. I'm just concerned that it has a little shaft play. How much is too much is the question?

For that price, jump on it. BB turbos have inherently more play than a sleeve bushed turbo. Is it in a car that runs well now? Just slap it in with an oil restrictor and enjoy it.

The car did run well until it was hit hard. The other reason I am questioning a rebuild is when I pulled off the maf there was quite a bit of oil in the intake trake? Whats that mean. Is it possible for a turbo to blow oil out the front?

What sort of oil restrictor are you talking about Sam? Is this needed for bigger turbos?

The oil restrictor is either a drilled
grup screw or a machine plate
with a small orifice of about .050 inch
which is place at the entrance of the
oil feed gallery to the turbo. Failing
to do so in a BB turbo will spell disaster.
Seems like our cars deliver too much
oil pressure to the turbo.
My Garrett GT turbo has a restrictor
of only 1mm OD.

Oil in the intake tract can possibly be turbo oil seals, or it could just be blowby through the PCV - do check the turbo for that. Places like Majestic will inspect your turbo and measure all tolerances for a small charge.
