Question Exhaust Manifold nuts are unique?

I was looking at the nuts that bolt the exhaust manifold to the head and noticed that they have slits which go about a 1/3 of the way around their circumferences. Why is that? More importantly, do I have to source the same type of nuts to "properly" re-install the exh. manifold?

I will be using head studs sourced from Saturn.

Thanks,
Simpson

Wow, how much was shipping?

Seriously, I'm not sure if you have to use the same nuts, but I used a standard exhaust nut to replace one of mine after one stud broke. Maybe the slit is to help expansion with the heating/cooling conditions that they see. Or maybe it's a sort of self-locking nut. Not sure, but my one standard nut is holding fine for a year now.

I'm pretty sure it's a self locking thing. The nuts on the rest of the exhaust have the same slit.

They are self locking for sure.

Try the copper style from Paragon. They have the shouldered nuts and do not need washers. I used washers anyway.

I was going to buy the Saturn studs as well, untill I found out that they only come in a bulk 10 pack-and take 2 weeks to order from Saturn. Your local dealer may be different...

I replaced the studs and nuts with factory pieces, and re-used the washers.

I just purchased the Saturn exhaust studs last week. Bought 8 of them for about 96 cents each. The first dealer I called didn't have them in inventory but his computer gave me another dealer with the parts in stock. I'll be putting them on this weekend (assuming I'm able to get that 2-3 manifold I need.
