Default Paint Q

Is the factory paint on 89 model year cars a single or base + clearcoat system?

I'm about to give my track appliance a decent polish & wax [to celebrate a class win at RR II]. Probably the first time in a long time, judging by the looks of the finish. Need to be sure if it is clearcoated or not.
Thanx!

I am pretty sure that all 944s and maybe even 968s had single stage. You will find out very quickly when you apply polish. If you see your applicator pad becoming the color of your paint, you have single stage.

Why do you want to know if it is single stage or clear? Almost all polish is fine for either type of paint. If it says clear-coat safe, you can use it on either. There aren't alot of single-stage only products. I think Meguiars has a few older products that are.

What are you planning on doing? You might want to check out this site: http://www.autopia.org

All metallic paints are clearcoated, the non metallics are single stage paints

I stand corrected about the composition of the paint...I haven't come across any metallics.

My comment on the products that are safe to use still stands though.

I have found that Meguiars makes the best wax. Polish on the other hand I use 3M compounds, that stuff works.

Thanks guys - it looked a whole lot like the GPWhite on my old Carrera [cos it IS]. I'm with Chris on the 3M compounds, but Zaino's systems is the absolute business for shine in my books. No more wax for me.
