Unhappy A/C Failure! Any guesses?

Driving at 60mph, 5th gear, no boost, A/C set on max cooling temp with fan at number 2. Nice cold air coming out when suddenly a slight hiccup and an odd noise results in super heated air blowing out of vents. I pull over, pop hood and see nothing wrong. Restart car and drive 90miles home with my feet roasting. Car ran perfectly, full boost available, no other problems except for the blast furnace coming out of the dash. Problem still there this morning.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
John

Heater clip? there is one underneath the dash (just minimal effort) and would let only HOT air come out. Im just guessing coz this is a common problem. Check out www.clarks-garage.com for info.....im assuming here.

Sounds like the dash switch also may be bad. I had one go out and all it would do was put out air like it was on full heat.

BTW, *Cough* Geaux Tigers *Cough*

It was the heater clip! A couple of zip-ties and I'm frosty again. Thanks for the help.

Oh yeah, Boosty, congrat to the tigers, but how about a rematch in Miami AKA "Norman South" in Jan? I'll be there, again.

Jason -
We enjoyed it also. I got back home in record time as well. We had to get out of that car/oven ASAP!

Hosrom -
Thanks for that site, I'll bookmark it. BTW, I've been to Dubai three times whilst in the Navy in '91. Stayed at the Inter-Continental Hotel , played golf at the Desert Course, bought gold at the Souk. Great town, but a little warm (111F!). How do you keep the car running cool over there?

Hmm... this sounds exactly like the problem I'm having at the moment, however I'm having trouble finding this linkage / clip. The car is a right hand drive '88

Then again, it keeps on blowing the A/C fuse as well, so there is probably more to it than just that...

rob, I'm haveing the same problem as you. The fuse keeps blowing after about 10 minutes of AC, then I get hot air dumped onto my legs. I've not had time to anything on it yet, but I don't think it's the heater clip for me since as long as the fuse is ok, the AC works great.

hmm... This is interesting. it seems that turning on the AC and blowing the #17 fuse seems to be fairly common. Anyone figured out why? anyone have any idea how common this really is?

my fuse blows immediately when I turn on the AC. I've got another thread mentioning it, but basically, what my mechanic has done in the meantime is bypass the switch in the temp control unit with a ghetto rigged 12v switch that I have to turn on and off manually. The only problem is that this also bypasses the coil freeze over protection circuit.

should this start a new thread? might be interesting.

I'll post s schematic of what's going on later if I have time... it's going to be a busy week

Texas Sooner: Ironically, the car is runs fine the temp does go up nearly to the third white mark, but when the fans kick in (speed 2) the temp goes back to second mark. To be honest, today was a hot day, it reached 107 (yesterday was a 87) But with the a/c on, the temp either sits on second mark (highway) and just over second in the traffic. nothing special is done to the car...YET, but i am planning on either thermal coating the exhaust manifold or a cheaper solution, is by installing a heat shielded blanket (from www.9xauto.com) Since the manifold is DIRECTLY over the oil cooler housing, not a good place from porsche, then again this is an old car, but man...WHAT A CAR!

107F! Yikes, that's hot. I noticed your car is very low, but I remember lots of flat, open roads. And not many obstructions, except for sand, should you miss a curve. How do the police view a high speed run out in the desert?
