Default What turbo would you pick?

Forum members, I need some help with turbo selection:

To be more specific than in my previous posts, here is where I am at:

To autocross and track race, what is a good turbo upgrade? I have spoke of the Super 75 and am currently waiting for it to arrive. After thinking about it, my only reason for deciding on it was due to it's size and track ability.

Competing in auto-x this year, I need something with useable boost. So, for a car with suspension, brakes, and air/fuel management, what are some good options.

I am liking the sound of the Club Sport turbo although I have no idea what that is. Doing a stroker kit is not in my budget and my car is pretty much going to stay where it's at once I get the WB02.

I know most turbos come from a limited number of manufacturers so if there is some magic turbo builder out there, I would love his number. Any and all help with explanation and experience is helpful. Thanks.

It all depends on what exactly you want your car for. Is it an everyday driver? (what the power/turbo to spool up full by 3,200 or so) Are you going to race it ever? As you have the boost coming up sooner, it takes away from the total power you can get, such as a car with a k26/6 spools full by say 2.8k a k26/8 gets to full by 3 but you have more power with the k26/8.

Myself I plan on the Vitesse Stage II with quick spool when the time comes. I've been very impressed with the dyno charts I've seen and the fact that it gives usable boost fairly quick. Yes, it's more expensive than some other options, but the customer service that comes with it seems to be second to none.

Course I am doing suspension and brakes right now so my turbo upgrade is a little ways off....

Not this is good info so far.

I thought if you spooled up quicker, sat at full boost by 3000rpm, then the hard part is keeping the turbo on full boost to 6500rpm. Currently, my stock turbo at 19lbs of boost hits it great, starts at 2800, but falls off by 5500 to 10lbs. It's the stock turbo which explains some of it.

Car is track/street in this order. Not everyday car. I love the Super 75, but it won't spool till 4500????? Hence, my dilemma with what turbo???? I was told the Super 75 with a small hot housing would help????

I need some education about turbos I guess before I go and drop one in.

Andy, for your needs I would think the Kokeln Club would do everything you want. Full boost at 3800 and holds it until 5400-5600, your power delivery is good all the way to 6500.

You can grow more with the Super 75 but honestly, that turbo is capable of what(with all the right stuff of course) 700hp?

Vitesse Stage 2 with quick spool comes to life (15psi) around 3100-3200rpm ( Some reported eve sooner spoolup). It stays on boost all the way to redline. Add race fuel, and you can run 20+psi all the way to redline. Another factor is the ability to modulate it... Some people misjudge the performance as it's smooth power delivery..

Many turbos make plenty of HP but at a narrow power band (4500rpm on up). Also, one must watch out for turbos that come on hard (ON/OFF). It makes the car very hard to handle.

The turbo characteristics you want:
- Efficiency based on your engine parameters.
- Early spoolup to increase the area under the power curve.
- Smooth power delivery for better control.
- Quick spoolup recovery between shifts.

Has anyone else bought one of the Lindsey turbos? You never really hear about anyone using them. I think you may be the first...

There are probably 10-12 Kokelns lurking around here that I know of, mine being one also NZ. Very nice turbos, smooth install and hook up, good delivery of power with the 2.5, especially with MAF and piggyback.

I've installed a Vitesse Stg II kit. Very nice stuff indeed. Easy install and great product.

We had a very good thread on the Vitesse and Lindsey products, it was civil, informative, inquiring, well until someone in CA decided to get nasty and John D locked the thread.

fast951 is right Andy, there are many choices and parameters when choosing turbos and many good opinions on the subject. The idea of getting a proven one, with proven parameters met and hardware installed; that's where our vendors come in that are good people, for those of us who don't fully grasp compressor maps, etc. Lindsey and Vitesse are two of the proven best.

Wow! You guys are great! It's all sinking in and starting to make more sense. I love the characteristics mentioned above and that signifies why a proven turbo is important. I hate losing any boost below 2500 just to get a bigger turbo. I can't imagine a wave of boost hitting hard at 3500 only to let off at 5500 so one could make the next auto-x gate?????

I guess the real answer is....One 951 with stock turbo for auto-x and another 951 for the track. Lets see.....need to get two car trailer, increase my tire budget...and ummmmmmm "Who here is a divorce attorney?"
