Oil Filter choices
It's time for Lorelei's first oil change (well... since I bought her, of course). I'm told the standard oil filter isn't good for our cars due to the position of the filter and that we need ones with check-valves that hold the oil in hte filter in order that the engine stays fully lubricated on startup. I can't seem to remember which ones have them, and which ones don't... what do you guys use?

Don, I can't seem to find any oil filter in their online product catalog... do you happen to have a link for them?
[EDIT:] Nevermind... found it through the search box. Thanks for the info guys!

If that link does not work for you, then just search for "OC142" using the main page's search option.

Carefull, they are NOT the same oil filters. I stock OE and Mahle and if you look at the inside of both filters they are not the same. Not even close. Which is better? I don't know. I have used both with no problems.
Currently have an OE filter on the engine now.

I use Amsoil's SDF-36 on my 84' and soon on the 83' which currently uses a Mahle. They have a 12,500mi/6mo change interval. They work great in my opinion. I have tried the Mobil M1-401 but they are really hard to come by in stock. I went through several K&N as well and I like them a lot. Especially the 1" nut on top made for easy take off and install!

Below is a reply that I received from Dave Mann, (his website above)
>>Hi Charlie, I do not have any comparisons to the Mahle. AMSOIL filters are manufactured to AMSOIL specifications by Baldwin ( Baldwin also owns Hastings). The AMSOIL Super Duty Filters are NOT Baldwin filters with an AMSOIL name on them. AMSOIL SDF's are the only 12,500 mile/6-month filter on the market. There are very few filter manufacturers in existence. About three major companies make about most of the filters on the market, both OEM and aftermarket. In fact, the same company (Champion Industries makes the GM AC filters and the Motorcraft Filters). Baldwin is one of the premier filter brands and you will find them typically on heavy diesel construction and industrial equipment. They are one of the largest and most experienced filter engineering and manufacturing companies there is. AMSOIL filters meet and far exceed all OEM specifications.
If you ever cut one open and compare it you will see the media inside has more surface area than other filters. It is also of a superior synthetic-cellulose and glass blend media and not paper like many other filters. There are also other parameters such as efficiently and beta rating which must be tested on specialized equipment so that cannot be determined by a rudimentary cut-open comparison. Plus the can is extremely strong and the steel is of heavier gage than others.<<
