I've performed the DYI Urethane trans mount which requires trans to hang supported by the torque tube to remove trans mount crossmember. Can you simply support trans with jack remove crossmember end bolts and lower jack and let the trans hang with crossmember attached to gain easier access to install shift linkage arm on the top of the trans?

 

yes, that'll work. You also need to unbolt the exhaust muffler hanger under the rear bumper since it's attached to the body while the rest of the exhaust attaches to the torque tube.
