Default So I am ready to kill the guy who invented star key bolts...

The parts can engine is totally diasassembled, and today I started disassembling the turbo engine. This time, Ryan (BarleyRocket) and I made short work of the clutch housing, but this time, the clutch to flywheel bolts were not allen as they were on the NA engine. They were star bolts. Maybe this has something to do with the cup clutch the PO installed. I made sure to use a brand new star key, I tapped the key in with a hammer, and Ryan held the bit perfectly fitted in the bolt while I steadily turned the ratchet. We removed a stellar 4 out of the 9 bolts. The other five stripped. I've removed so may keyed bolts and I haven't stripped one in a long time. I always check the bit for good condition, clean out the bolts if they are dirty, and tap the bit in with a hammer to seat it. I did all of this and they still stripped. If someone would like to give me the name and address of the person who invented star bits, I'll gladly tale a road trip to pay them a visit. If anyone needs me I will be out in my garage all night with the drill.

The only way to remove these without taking any risk is to use an impact hammer. BTW, i stripped most of mine the first time but they came out fairly easily with a drill and a set of easy outs. Good luck!

You can use an impact wrench with a star bit adapter?
I was always scared to try that.

It is most likely safer than powering them off with elbow grease. As long as the star socket is seated well and is new...

Yea, I love the triple square bolts!

Once I got GOOD bits (snap-on or S&K) I never had a problem with stripping the bolts.

Also an impact wrench makes it a lot easier, you can concentrate on holding the bit perpendicular to the bolt, keeping it square and not stripping the head.

Sorry for the typo, im talking about a tool called an impact screwdriver, that is the way to get triple squares out. They are pretty rare tools I think, but they do the job easily.

Mark might be talking about this tool. Sears has it. I didn't think it would work the first time I used one. I was completely wrong...it works excellent!!! Attach the correct bit, put it on the bolt (screw or whatever), and strike the back with a hammer. The action pushes in and turns at the same time. I've used it on many rusted and seized screws and the 1st or 2nd hit they were loose. You can also change direction with it.

I bought one a few years back and it works great on tough bolts and screws. Reno

I've actually used an impact wrench on those. The key is to turn down the air pressure to avoid stripping them out. 90psi can make hash out of them, but 50 does the trick nicely.

Yea, impact screwdrivers are great, but I had no problems with an impact wrench getting triple square bolts out. I have stripped these bolts with a ratchet though (when I didn't have an impact wrench).
