Default Emission Test in Washington State

Any one out there that has installed the GURU chips and boost enchancer from the State of Washington? I am wondering about passing the state emission dyno test.
My car now passes with the stock chips.

I love the washington state emissions law....if your car was bought in washington, you don't have to have testing done. If it was bought in another state, you have to have testing done every year...lol.

Worst case, if it won't pass on the Guru chips you could always turn the boost down, put the old chips in and smog it on those. Swap em back in after you pass of course.

Karl; I don't think that's quite how it works. It's more based on municipality: king county dwellers get a visual test and a sniff test, where I live it's a sniffer only every 2 years, many of the outlying counties don't even have required testing. In my area, you can get a waiver if you spend over $200 post failed test (I think that's still true).

I really wanted to hear from someone who has the chips and has gone through the test in Washington before I put down the money for the kit.

Thats how it worked in snohomish county when i lived there, and down in pierce county where my brother lived. We were both told that you can drive a 1954 chevy that spews out black smoke and not have to have emissions done on it as long as the vehicle was purchased in washington. My brother has to have emissions done every year on his jeep which he brought in from out of state, but does not have to have it done on the vehicle he purchased in state. Both are same year vehicle.

Karl,

IIRC, I don't think that it has anything to do with the question of whether the car is purchased in WA....

I believe cars > 25 years are exempt from emissions testing (which is why your brother's 54 Chevy was exempt). In 2004, even numbered model years 1980 through 1994, and 1997 and 1999 vehicles require an emission test before re-licensing.

I purchased my '84 944 NA in WA (Clark Country) 1-1/2 years ago, and it still had to undergo emissions testing.

Just had my stock '86 951 emissions tested last year.

msaturbo: For what it's worth. My 968 has chips installed on it and easily passed emissions. I know it's not a turbo but I thought I throw in my 2 cents.

Karl2bdc: I have read and understood the same as ASG stated. My 1994 968 was tested two years ago by the previous owner and I will have to do so this year.

My parents moved back in state from PA, brought a 96 buick and a 98 jeep, both had to go through emissions. When they got rid of them and got a new expedition and new explorer, those do not have to be emissions tested and that is in Snohomish county.....wierd. Who knows what the hell the law is...lol...sorry for hijacking the thread!

IIRC, cars < 5 years old or > 25 years do not have to be tested...which probably explains why they waived emissions testing on your parents' new Expedition and Explorer.

Kipsap Co. has NO emmission testing of any kind. I'm legal with my cat removed. Every Co. I have been in has different laws. We will have emmission testing within 5 years is my guess.

944Willie...FWIW anyone running without a cat is breaking federal law, governed by EPA clean air standards....you just won't get caught b/c of no local testing.
