Camber, maybe even toe, and the tire sidewall/tread width all matter. Hoosiers for example are wider than other brands in most comparable sizes, and have a bead bulge in the side wall construction that makes them even bulkier.

I've run 275/40/17s, 275/35/17s and 285/30/18s on 10" rear wheels, and I do need to have offset pretty close or I can get some rubbing on the inside of the body or the outside quarter panel lip when cornering hard (track use). I run about 56-59mm offsets with somewhere between -2.0 to maybe -2.8 deg neg camber. 62mm offsets will rub on the inside with 275/40/17s with my setup, 65mm 285/30/18s will rub on the inside. So I have to use 1/4" spacers for both of those wheels.

I'm asking about 275's on an 89 Turbo ( I've heard the fenders are rolled from the factory?) I had rub on my 87 951 w/275's fenders not rolled. Other than lowering some front and back I use a street alignment.

BBS recommends 255/35-18 for their 18" 951 LM wheel. Just a data point for you. YMMV.

Oddjob's warning still holds true as you can get rub on the inside of the wheelwell. I did with 275x17 Hoosiers and an aggressive race alignment.

I run/have been running for some time now that exact setup on my '89. 275x18 Continental ECS 35 series in the rear on 18x10 OZ Vela II wheels, and 235x18 40 series up front. If your alignment guy knows what he's doing, its not a problem at all. Mine is lowered too.

This little thing is fun to mess with. You can measure the clearance you have now and this program will tell you the difference from your current setup.
