I'm looking for a muffler recommendation for my track car ('88 951S); I've currently got the Lindsey 3" exchaust system (no cat) and the Flowmaster 40 muffler.
The volume is OK (won't be bothered if it's just a bit louder) but looking for more of a deep sound and perhaps a bit more free-flowing.
Any suggestions?
Or, any comments on the Borla XR-1, Moroso Spiral, Matrix, etc...?
Thanks,
Rick

It's hard to beat the performance of the XR-1. Over the years I've tried tons of mufflers (flowmasters, dynomax, flow-tec.....) and the only three I would ever recommend for performance (not just sound) is the XR-1, Edelbrock RPM, and Bassani. I have the B&B on my car now.....What a POS. Soon to be replaced by an XR-1.

I have magaflow..oval model. Its pretty nice. It has some resonance around 2500 rpm and it also sounds like trumpeting machinegun (if that makes any sense) at about 5500 rpm to redline.

I have the Borla XR-1 installed where the Cat would be with a full 3" exhaust and a Sebring Tuning Rear muffler and the sound is very good. Not quite stock, but still very quiet. Other than their cost, the XR-1 is a very good muffler. I imagine if you installed three XR-1's you probably would have no exhaust noise but still have full exhaust flow since it is a straight through.

I have a Edelbrock RPM muffler and no cat. Car sounds superb! Too quit on the inside for my taste, but sounds more like a motercycle at high rpm on boost

bassani is really nice. Do they make a muffler for our car? Or are you just taking a muffler from some other application and fitting it to our car's??

Believe it or not the magnaflow flows better and makes more HP then the B&B and flowmaster will so for the dollar it's a decent choice. The edelbrock is an awesome muffler, you guys should check it out. Almost an exact copy of the XR-1 with a slightly cooler sound.
Most of my muffler testing was in the mustang world but at the end of the day, flow is flow and HP is HP. I have seen the magnaflow make 8 more HP on the dyno then the B&B. This was on a 400 RWHP 951.
