how does a 944 turbos performance compare to a 930 turbo
I now own a 944 turbo I hope to restore. see post below in
944 Turbo forum: "Found- factory race / test car"
Its Factory balance and blueprinted and is between 250 and 300 H.P.
I have never driven a 944T (951), Ive driven several rip your hair out
older 930s. are they similar in performance???
Have any of you driven or own both???
Just want to know about what to expect when its back on the road.
Thanks,

I own both. A slightly modified 951 will walk all over the 930. The 951 is easier to drive at the limits, and more user friendly. However nothing comes close to the looks of the 930.
You can modify the 930 and with the CIS maybe get around 400-425hp, but it's failry expensive..

I know that there was a magazine article review of the '89 951 vs. '89 930. I have it somewhere on a CD. I'll see if I can find it for you!
Jake951 (I believe) is the original poster of the article!

porschehead. no, you do not own JUST a 951. you own a TURBO CUP CAR. They have been known to produce quite a bit more power than a stock 944 Turbo S AND they handle better!
I'd be surprised if you ever decide to sell it!!
I've got an 86 951 that I'm modding and i'm also putting aside $$ for a turbo cup car!

There was an article in Automobile mag. dated june 1988
titled "Is the new porsche 944turboS better than the old 911 turbo...."
Derek Bell raced both cars at willow springs raceway and said " after driving
the turboS the 911 felt like it had a flat tire. The turboS beat the 911 turbo by about 2 seconds at the track with Bell driving both cars ...If you want the article
send me your Fax# and I will send it to ya .

Ok, here's that Automobile Magazine comparison for ya:

I've driven all three actually. The 1st-gen 930 ('76-79) had virtually identical performance to the '86-88 non-S 944 Turbos: 0-60 in 6.7s and 156mph top-speed. But the feel was completely different. While the 944 was progressive & smooth in its power delivery, the 930's powerband was an on/off switch. Nothing below 4000rpm, then power doubles within 500rpms and smacks you upside the head. That might FEEL fast, but doesn't make for an easy car to actually drive fast. A wide, flat, smooth powerband of the same peak numbers will always be faster.
Then when the 930 came back in '86-89, it evolved to gain 50hp, a 5-speed gearbox and a tamer powerband. It definitely feels slower than the earlier 930 with no sudden rush of power. But the numbers shows it's significantly faster than its predecessor by chopping off a full second from the 0-60 times. That's the car that's reviewed in the Automobile Mag. article above. Now it's more comparable to the 944 TurboS in performance rather than the non-S car. But in stock trim, it's still not a match for the 944 TurboS.

Just some pointless nit-picking from a reformed 911er...
The 930 did not get a 5 speed until '89. It was 4 speed until then. The US 930 was rated at 245hp in 76 and 77, then it went up 20hp to 265 in 78 and 79, and then up to 282 in 86, for a total increase of 37hp. Actual power tended to exceed these ratings. RoW cars had slightly different ratings.
The 6.7 second 0-60 time is very conservative for the early cars. Some magazines published 5.0 test times. A friend had an early 76 car back in the day, which ran high 12's/low 13's bone stock -- in1976 on 1976 tires. It was a hell of a car back in the day of smogged out Stingrays and 1.3 liter fiats. The auto industry is only now catching up after nearly 30 years. One hell of a car!

951 much easier to drive fast. The turbo seems to spool up a bit earlier too. Rowing through the gears is much much easier. I find the 930 to feel more solid, more "vault-like". Something about it though when the 930 hits spool. It says "bite my ****" to everybody. I cant wait until I make the phone call to Imagine Auto for the big upgrade. Unfortunately its at least a year away. Not as simple as throwing a chip into it like a 951 and instantly adding 60 horses. Gotta replace parts with better parts. $7500 should take you to 400hp though. I imagine that would take you to the low to mid 4s 0-60.

UD Pride, there is a red 930 in Stephen's shop right now that looks eerily close to yours. It's amazing what he can do-to the tune of his 2001 996 Turbo put down 609hp at the wheels-and he drives it everyday. Giddy-up indeed.
Porschehead-
I REALLY like my 951. I've driven both cars, and both were fast. I'm leaning toward the air-cooled camp just because the '80's 911 (930) was a dream from childhood. I need to own one someday.
Your car is also a dream for many on this board. More than just the performance is the rarity of the car. It will be fast-count on it. But also, when it's done, everyone will hover around it at the Porsche shows. Frankly, I'm jealous-but I'm never satisfied with what I have.

Danno, Thanks for the magazine article...."Bookum Danno"....
Just kidding, bet you hear that all the time.
Ben, I too am like you I grow tired of stuff I've had in the past...
been through about ten 911s over the years.
But I bought this car so cheap, If I can get it running and in the Rothmans livery and back on the road I'd be dumb to sell it. I dont care if the under side and interior, and paint won't be show quality.... "It is what it is"
,an old race car I found in a back yard and if its a little rough thats ok
with me, its sort of part of its charm.

porschehead, I would sell that car immidiately for many times what you paid for it, to somebody who can restore it properly. You can have a 944 turbo that's faster w/the money you get.
