That's pretty optimistic. It assumes the block _bore etc.) is good, and that sounds unlikely in this case. I've learned through experience (which I have a bit of) that any noise that appears quickly is usually big trouble. Get off the track or road pronto and shut it down, and you'll save yourself some big dollars.

Oh yea, I was answering a question posted by another user. Dirk needs a new engine.

Turbite,
Maybe you should take a look at this item on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=2466190724
and a few others that the same person is selling.

Pop quiz!
Which of the following four is not like the other three?

is it: (4) (3) (2) (1)

That wasn't a lifter tick after all, but a wrist pin ticking.
The piston just got chewed up to little pieces and is all over the place.
The rod actually survived and is still in the cylinder.

The top of the head looks pretty chewed up.
Its almost guaranteed that some of the piston went through the turbo.
I'm probably not going to get a new engine at this point, but just let it sit.

WOW! Did you remove the piston or did it look like this when you pulled the head? Best of luck!

Are you serious?? The piston disintegrated?? You didn't just take it out of the bore? I have never seen anything even close to that... wow! But the bore (at least what the picture shows) still looks relatively in shape...

EDIT: Just saw your reply above... well!

Back off a bit and take another one. It's strangely intriguing....I know it's wrong to look, but I must...

WOW!

Something to be said about the strength of forged rods.

DAMN!

Hmm, ok I was wrong. It wasn't your bearings that caused the BB's in a can rattle. It looks like #3 piston was melted by the #3 injector going way lean and causing detonation (the BB's in a can rattle), then that blew (burned) a hole through your piston. The "Exhaust leak" you heard was the hole in the piston.

No, that wouldn't show up on the wideband O2 sensor because the sensor reads the exhaust from all the cylinders, the rest of the cylinders were still working properly, full rich, and this masked the #3 injector problem. I've seen this happen before, not to destruction, but a destroyed block nonetheless. The detonation burned a nice valley in the cylinder wall. The piston was saved by a thermal coating, it looked brand new still.

Wow, that sucks.

Good luck!

i think the bbs in the can sound was teh piston going through the exhaust...not bbs in a can, but piston in a can...

seems to me that the thing was mortally wounded and coming apart before the noise ever occurred.

wouldnt suprise me at all if the turbine wheel punted a chunk of piston through the down pipe, holing the exhaust.

Damn Turbite/Dirk. Sorry to hear about the troubles you're going through right now. I have a bit of an oil leak and a noise in my car (only when I make right turns) now so I'll be making sure I get this taken care of as soon as possible.

I'd love to see the process of pulling your engine and rebuilding it so I'll also offer to help/watch where I'm able. However, I'm all the way down in San Jose.

I hope it works out that the pain (cost) is less than you expect.

I'd doubt that any major part of the piston made it out the exhaust valve. I'll bet he'll find most of it in the oil pan.
If the turbo was at full speed (> 100,000 rpm), which it was, then it would have disintegrated when a foreign object hit it (like a chunk of piston).

Either way, it sucks.

Thanks for the comments guys.

I will take some more pics.
It does suck, yet it is extremely interesting to look at.

It could have been detonation that caused the piston to go, I didnt think of that.
It could have also just been the wrist pin bearing went.

My next goal is to get the turbo out, and survey the gore there.
