Default 944 Turbo S factory exhaust tip

My '88 944 Turbo S (silverrose) has an aftermarket muffler with a chrome-finish exhaut tip. I believe that the factory exhaust tip was a simple steel tube. Maybe with a dark color finish.

Does anyone have a close-up of the finish of an original 951 exhaust? I'm keen to bring mine as close as possible to original.

This one is similar to what I have. It's definitely not close to factory!

Could this be European or ROW only?

It's a slip on sleeve over the muffler pipe. The N/A's had a chrome tip, the Turbo's had a black tip. Looks similar to a gun blued finish.

There were originally four versions with part numbers: 477-253-191-C, 477-253-191-D, 477-253-191-E and 477-253-191-F. PET only distinguishes them as chrome or black and doesn’t highlight any as M758 as they do for other parts.

Unfortunately they are all nla and have been superseded by one new chrome version #477-253-192-G which Sunset currently sells for $105.10

I have a turbo S and my muffler tip was oval and chromed. I replaced it with a stainless oval tip that looks just like it. Purchased from summitracing.com. I’ll tried to find it, but it wasn’t on the website. I’ll keep looking. It is oval, about 8 inches in length, 2.5 inch inlet.

Those are the part numbers I've found in the 1985>>1988 PET for the 951:

As MAGK944 says, it's not specified if the Turbo S (option M758) had the exhaust tip in chrome or in black. I'll need to dig out some period photographs from promotional material and magazines to see if I can clarify that! If you have any old pictures of M758 cars, please share them!

Here you go. This is almost a carbon copy on my turbo S. $28.

From summitracing.com. It’s a Vibrant 1406.

the only difference is that these edges are rolled, whereas the original was not. They simply cut the steel exhaust pipe at the muffler and tack welded the new tip on. Good luck.

PS - the original tip on my turbo S was bright chrome, not black.

Yet there are many pictures of claimed all original Silver Rose euro cars with chrome tips.

And what would be the option code for the chrome tip?

Afaik there is no option code for the chrome or black tip either in PET or the factory manuals where all the factory codes are listed. I’m going to guess this tip swap was a dealer and not a factory option.
