Default Timing Belt Life

The timing belt on my 86 951 was changed four years ago then retensioned. Since then I have only put 6K on the car. I have searched the forum and found conflicting information on the life span of the belt. Should this be replaced at a time interval on top of a milage interval?

Indeed there are so many variables involved in determining the proper belt replacement intervals. A lot depends on how you drive the car. The environmental effects on the belt like hot, cold, dry and wet. The proper maintenance would be 3 years or 36k miles or whichever comes first.

At our local "Timing Belt Tech Session" at IMA Motorsport last Saturday, the lead technician recommended changing every 30K miles or 5 years, whichever comes first.

Five years sounds like a long time to me. If you could guarantee there was no oil on it, maybe.
