The $120 HF piece is a track hound's friend. Mine worked like a charm for two years, then .........broke. A few of the local guys had the same failure - some much sooner than two years. Decided to open it up and take a little look.
The pinion gear is the week link in this tool. It literally shatters after a while. Thats the bad news. Teh good news is that replacement pinions are available from HF for around $2.00, and a pinion transplant takes around 30 minutes.
The little HF nasty is up and running again. Whew! Nearly caved in a got a Snap-On.

Hey Tony,
Have a write up for at-track replacement of the bearing in case mine fails?
If not, can you fix mine when it does?
On second thought, maybe it'd give me a good excuse to borrow Chris' mega-dollar, professional (I use that term loosely when it's Chris'), Snap-On...

Mac's 3/8 impact has 20 more ft lbs in reverse than Snap-on, and is a bunch cheaper. There is another even lower cost alternative. PM me if you would like more detail.
