This is true and alos explains why the top of #3 looks the way it does.

Someone had a Powerhaus head the other day, maybe they still do.

Over cleaner for the tops of the pistons?

Good job getting it off. Lindsey sells fully prepped heads off the shelf for $499, which could help speed things up for you -- kind of hard to beat at a local machine shop. I would not put that head back on without getting it cleaned up. Are you planning to re-use the factory studs?

As for the head having been replaced "recently"....I'd say no.

The tops of the pistons look absolutely horrible. I don't recall ever seeing a 951 with that much build up.

You have to remove all of the build up from the tops of the pistons. All of it!

Next, I'd strongly recommend having the head dissembled, thouroghly cleaned, and a full head rebuild as necessary. Replace the springs with a new set, check the valve guildes, replace the seals, and a good high quality valve grind making sure that all the stem heights are set correctly.

The good news is that fixing up the head is not that expensive, and cleaning the tops of the pistons is free (only your labor). Use a shop vac to make sure you get all the particles out from between the pistons sides and the bore. You should be able to rock the pistons a little to help facilitate this. A strong shop vac will suck all the crap out.

To clean the tops of the pistons I spray on brake cleaner, on a rag and on the tops of the pistons. I rub the saturated rag over the tops of the pistons to work in the cleaner. Then I use a dull scraper to scrape off the build up. You will have to make several passes, but the stuff will start to chunk off. Make sure you get down to the metal without gouging the pistons. Again... make several passes and get it all off.

Good luck,

TonyG

PS> I don't have any rebuilt heads to offer you for a 951. Sorry.

Any suggestions as to what to do to the head while it is off, this car is going to make some serious power (at least I hope it is). While I am not in the position to spend 5K on valvetrain (like I should) if I am going to have to have it worked might as well have some little mods done to it.

Hi Matt,
Have you been running a rich set-up ?
The carbon built up is the worse that
I've seen.

JChen, I have only run this engine for 9 miles, came like that from PO, car and engine have 195K on it.

Adrial - serious is as close to 400 at the wheels as I can make on pump gas at between 18-21 psi.

Already did the bottom end with all new bearings etc. The bottom had just been balanced and looked great (I have receipts for that). I was not planning on doing the head, I figured when the gasket went I would deal with it (and I knew it wouldnt be long). After dropping a washer, I figured what the hell no time like the present.

m42racer, I'd appreciate if you didn't contribute a negative comment to most of the non-PD info posted. There are other shops who believe it or not know what they're doing and don't charge an arm and a leg.

FWIW, I had a great experience with PD and will not hesitate to call them about the head work. I will not use Lindsey (not because they dont know that they are doing) because they have never felt the need to return a phone call or email.

I am going to run it to my local machinist or to Don Istooks place if he can work on it quickly after talking with PD regarding price.

Matt, the Lindsey head is a great option for a quick turnaround. I'm sure within the realms of Dallas you can find a very good shop to do it. If you have some time, give Memphis Motorwerks a call. Jim(jwl) came back from there and it was great. They did just a small bit of work in the intake side but it was really nice, $$ about the same as Lindsey.
