I didn't actually lower the car, but I did a test fit putting my rear wheels up front with the car in the air and it didnt seem likely that it'd fit. It seemed that they would rub the fenders.

It's do-able, dependent on what you consider tolerable. I'm running 17x9 996 wheels with 255-40-17 tires up front, but that is with Ground Control threaded perches and hats fitted on my shocks, 2.5" Eibach springs, and anywhere between -2 and -3 degrees of camber. My set up is a snug fit and I can't turn my steering lock-to-lock without the tires rubbing slightly on the inside of the wheel well. I haven't tried 245s, but they should offer a tiny bit more clearance.

996 wheels dont have the same offset as 951S wheels.
951S are 65mm (stock front 7"), not sure about 996 but around 55mm IIRC.
951S rears are 60mm.
Higher offset means the wheel is pushed in farther.

My CS 9" rear wheels (et60) fit fine on the front of my '89 with 245/45-16s, but I converted my Koni coilovers to 2.5" springs. The rim will not clear the stock springs. My 17x9 et50 wheels with 255/40s will rub the front fender lip.

Highboy,
The 9x16 may fit on the front depending on your suspension settings.
I used to run my 9x16 rims (with 225 tires) on the front at the track for rain tires. Everything was fine with stock camber settings. Tires seemed to have plenty of clearance.
When I swithed to a more aggressive camber (-2 degrees), the rim rubbed on the spring. This is with stock TurboS suspension.

My '89 has the stock Koni coilovers, like on the Turbo S, but they were revalved and the perches were changed to accomodate 2.5" springs. Other than that, the only changes to the front suspension are a strut tower brace and adjustable camber plates.
When the suspension was completely stock, the 9" rim would rub the springs even with only -1.5 camber.
I think on your '88 you have to go to coilovers in the front for the 9" rims to work.

GaryK - thanks - I have a complete KONI adjustable coil-over suspenion on order and hope to be upgrading by the weekend - as for 16x9 951S wheels - do you know where I can find 2 decent ones? in addtion, what size tires are you fitting on the frt and rear?
thanks
