Unhappy Interior Rear View Mirror Problem

Today marks the 19th time the interior rear view mirror on my '88 944 (NA) has fallen off the windshield in the past two years. Porsche service techs, body shop guys, and auto glass guys have all tried their respective "magic elixirs", but nothing works. Those fixes have lasted anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months. Has anyone on this board run into a similar problem? What was the fix ... if there is/was one? Thanks!

I put mine back on with a rearview mirror glue kit from my local Kragen store a couple weeks ago and it has stayed on so far. Plus it only cost me under $3. It comes with a special solution that you use to clean the glass first then you use the adhesive to put the mirror back on.

Default Interior Rear View Mirror Problem

A bit of added information may be helpful. Loctite has been the brand most often used, although I've used other brands. I've applied it, and other epoxies, exactly as the instructions indicate, and the "professionals" that have tried their products have done likewise. Surface preparation of both the mounting button and glass surface has been equally exact. While one or two episodes of the chemical bonding not working would suggest that it wasn't done correctly ... 19 times is beyond my comprehension, not to mention the collective experience of the people who are in that business. Fortunately, the auto glass shops stand by their work and put it back on at no cost, but I'd really like to find a permanent solution. I appreciate your input.

I hate to say it, but when this happened on my old chrysler sedan (beater) 10 years ago, it only took me one shot to fix it using a kit from AutoZone. How many such kits have you tried?

wow! thats got to be a record.

Where are you living?
does it corrolate with excessive cold or hot weather? sunshine? bumps in the road?

My guess would be that some of the old epoxy stuff is stuck on the glass and reducing the effectiveness of the others.

How big are the panties you have hanging off of them?

5 lb hoochie-mama parachutes will pull the mirror off everytime. May want to hang some nice size 0 thongs instead....

I used the autozone stuff for my truck mirror. The Porsches dont have rear views. I can see fine out of the side ones. The rear view is just distracting to my forward line of site in the 44s.

...had the same problem. Tried the quick-fix kits at the autoparts stores, various superglues, about 5 different epoxies, JB Weld, contact cement, and nothing worked. Chunks of glass have come off with the epoxies, but there is a patch of JB Weld that I cannot remove. I may try that again after a very thorough cleaning with soapy water followed by acetone.
