Default Idle "sticking"?

As I was checking if my speedo was working (see other post if interested) driving around the block I noticed my idle was sticking around 1200 RPM. When I blipped the throttle it came back down to normal (850 or so). I removed the air intake thinking the throttle body butterfly might be gummed up but it was nice and clean. Cleaned it some more (like new now) and drove around the block again. Did it again. Thinking it might be the cable sticking I pulled back into the garage with the high idle to check the positioning ... looked fine

Any ideas?

Bypass your icv and see if it still idles high.

When this happens next, try tapping on the ICV to see if it's sticking. If no change, then do the work to bypass it.

First off, Thank you both.

Would a faulty ICV behave like a sticking throttle body valve? What I mean is...

The idle is fine at start up and after blipping the throttle when it does stick. Just thought the ICV would behave differently. This FEELS like a sticky cable or valve but just not making sense.

Where is the ICV to bypass?

#3 in <this procedure>

Icv could be working fine on start up and cold idle but if it sticks in the “cold” position it will raise the idle even with the engine hot. A blip may unstick it.

Anyway it’s worth eliminating with a quick check just to make sure and then you can move on to other things.

On my 951, I've seen the following. I start the car and it idles normally while driving around for 30 minutes or so. I turn the car off and do some errands for another 15 minutes. I restart the car and it idles between 1200 and 1600. When this happened, I popped the hood and tapped on the ICV and the idle dropped to 800 rpms. I then replaced the ICV thinking it was sitckeing The problem still continues but at least the ICV seems to be acting as one would expect.

I had this problem last summer and had no luck solving it - I assumed it was the rebuilt throttle body, or cable, or something binding, but I was unable to fix it. It wouldn't happen every time - usually only when driving (not idling with hood open).

As a side effect of installing VEMS last month, this entire issue is gone. Not sure if that points to the DME or ISV being the cause.

It might be the throddle position sensor idle switch. Or the adjustment is off for the TPS. They are known to go bad.

Throttle position may have “looked fine”, but did you try pushing it closed? Also, did you have any slack in the throttle cable when it was stuck with a high idle?
