Default Can the power steering pressure hose be rebuilt?

My pressure hose between the pump and steering rack is leaking badly. Can it be rebuilt by a good hydraulic shop? Does anyone have first hand experience with this? What makes my concern is a kind of a crimp in the middle of it - I circled it red on the picture below, the hose is in the sleeve but you can see it underneath. What is this? A flow restrictor or maybe a check valve? Is it a show stopper for a shop? New one costs a lot more $$$ than I would like to spend on it... I have a used spare one but I rather rebuild the leaky hose than use a 25 years old rubber that can start leaking next day.

Yes a good shop should be able to do this.

I had my lines rebuilt in Calgary by Green Line Hose and Fittings

Did they reuse the *thing* from the middle of the hose? What is this?

If I have time I will stop by the place tomorrow with the hose you have in your pic and see what they say. I rebuilt my lines back in 2009 I think it was. I am pretty sure they can do it again so that will confirm that it can still be done. If that is the case a shop where you are should be able to the job. The rebuild would have a new rubber section for sure.

Any decent hydraulic shop should be able to handle it,, I've had countless custom and just remade ones to get race cars running, its not even that expensive especially if you bring the complete lines in and tell them to re-use what they can.

A word of warning though, make sure the hose is 100% identical. I recently had mine rebuilt and they must have had the hose size off by a hair and it caused all sorts of issues. I ended replacing it with a new one and it is perfect gain. Be careful, with this!

Thank you, I'll make sure they use identical hose diameter. Just curious - what issues you are talking about?

You should be ok size wise as hoses will be all metric in Poland.

It's the US standard sizes that create the issues. I had to do a work around with my setup.

If the internal tubing is barbed like that on the oil cooler hoses, you can recycle these yourself by carefully cutting off the old ferules with a Dremel reinforced disk, then use good quality stainless fuel pressure hose clamps to secure the new hose section, available at any auto parts store for a few buck$.

Well, as far as I know this hose works under 120 bar pressure so I wouldn't use any clamps. I think crimp is a must.

To close this thread - this hose is rebuildable, the "thing" in the middle is a flow restrictor (orifice?) and can be reused.

Good to know about the flow restrictor.

Thanks for adding and sharing the info.
