Default torsion bar question.

Hey all, just wanted to know a little about the front torsion bars installed on some 944T cars, the one that goes across the inside of the engine compartment.

Do they really do any good? What material are they made from? I work at a small machine shop, so can I make something like this from a 3 piece assembly?

Thanks,

Peter.

You mean the strut tower bars.

usually machined aluminum I think, or steel. Depends on the design.

my mistake... i guess it's called a strut brace. Now that I have the name right, this seems a very simple device, is it worth while? Also I noticed that most of these look like they have a slight bend to them.... if it really 'pulls' then wouldn't the bend part hit the engine?

Thanks,

Peter.

They dont really pull, they just "lock" the tops of the strut towers together to prevent body flex and improve handling a bit. The bend is to get over the engine. If theres enough body flex to have the bend hit your engine, chances are you have much larger problems that some fresh scratched on your engine
