So there must be some reason why they made this bulletin...

Why is it this bulletin gets trawled out constantly? Who cares? So Porsche didn't issue a bulletin saying "don't tune your engine to put out 400bhp" but I'm sure they think the same of big power hikes.

I have driven around 60k on 18" rims and guess what? My wheels haven't fallen off yet.

As Danno says, it's just CYA.

Porsche designs and builds their car to their specs, Anything changed or modified Porsche does not want to be responsible for. For instance if I put 18'' wheels on my car and crash it into a tree and I try to sue Porsche because of it they can pull out their bulliten in court and they have their back coverd. It is called a disclaimer.

It's unfortunate that the U.S. is so litigious and people are so sue-happy. Someone else, a mysterious 'they' must be responsible for EVERYTHING that doesn't go right in my life! Someone is responsible for my poor diet and health, someone is at fault for my kids growing up without a good education and healthcare, someone is to blame for me tripping on the sidewalk! I'll sue them ALL !!!

Hm, I fitted 18 inchers and went back to 17's. I think 17 is a perfect compromise for street driving. Car will let go much quicker with 18's be warned. Any wear in suspension is greatly more noticable with 18's fitted. Unless on brand new shocks and rubber bushes I would not recomend going to 18's. Having said that on smooth autobahn = good on a A/B road blast = bad. If fitting them for looks and posing - fine.

"Car will let go much quicker with 18's be warned."

Yes, very similar to the fast & quick breakaway characteristics of street tires vs. race tires (they don't even squeal). Kinda like that thread somewhere that had people talking about body-roll on the car. With having super-stiff car not give much feedback on what it's doing compared to one that had a little more motion to give the driver some cues as to how close to the limit he is. How about some 22" wheels, eh?

dub-deuces hehe blang-blang

i chose 17x10.5 front 17x13 rear (widebody car) for the sake of ride-comfort, ball-joint stress (although i have fabcar arms) - plus i prefer the meatier look of 17" tires vs 18" rubber-bands, er, tires maybe i watch too much WRC?

Might just be a Halloween story but that's what I heard:
Porsche did testing at Nordschleife. The testsubject was a 3.3 911 turbo with 18" wheels fitted. After a frew laps they chequed the car and backend wheel heading was cracked - not completely (Materialermüdung). So on later models there must have been several modifications on the cars Porsche fitted 18" wheels. The only 944 derivate with 18" was 968 turbo - great car though.

They don't have to. A manufacturer builds a car followed by a process to get streetlegalisation; at this point many parameters are fixed; power also. So you may have 20 % power gain without going through the process again. If your car has more than 20 % more power then it is no Porsche, what ever make again because Porsche didn't build it that way.

Of course less power is never a problem for the law.

dmoffitt,

Hey do you have pix of your car we can view? I've always wanted to go wider in the back but not sure how it'll look with the conversion.

I second that, I am drooling to see a really wide a$$ 944. I saw a 911 gt3 pass me the other day with an a$$ so wide I thought I was looking at a woman.

How does this look-not really wide but it's decent? Thanks to blue S2 for taking the pix at the recent MD meet.

Cool Wheels and tires for my '89 Turbo S

I have an '89 Turbo S that I am retrofitting with
Front 18 X 8.5" 52mm offset
Rear 18 X 10" 58mm offset
Does anyone know the max tire size I can use without rubbing. I am trying for 255's in the front and 285's in the rear.
Thank you,
Geoff

Default Wheels and tires for my '89 Turbo S

..."But one should make sure the suspension is up to the task, and has had all the proper updates...."

Which updates are you referring to? Again, I have an '89 Turbo S.
Thank you,
