Todd, between gear oils I had a very noticable noise difference, as well as a noticable shifting difference in how easily it went into each gear - this was just with different oils, my old oil wasn't actually that old.

"For those,like me, who don't have a 17mm hex or allen. I use a VW wheel stud with 2 nuts on it. It's a perfect match. You might need to use some heat, if it hasen't been drained in years."

If you know of a VW shop, they will have this 17mm hex tool as well. Some part on a VW Bug uses this same size, was it the tranny?
