If you 'drag' your car...then it wont be long before you will be dragging it to the shop

When I still had the stock turbo, I experimented with different launch rpms and tested them on the Gtech. The most effective one was to rev to 3750, and hold the throttle there. Then slowly but firmly engage the clutch, with a little slipping. I would try for just a little bit of wheelspin , you have to feather the throttle just slightly when you let off the clutch or you will really smoke the tires. Its very hard to manage the quickly rising torque curve, it just takes practice. I was able to get down to a consistent 2.1 60 foot on street tires.

Good luck and like everyone will tell you, be careful. These cars were not meant to drag, and they will break sooner or later.

Breaking the entire drivetrain from engine to CV joints all at once I'd like to try myself sometime..... but I know how my luck runs.....so I probably never will. I do play when it's wet here sometimes and do some donuts, but otherwise when its as cold as it is here, with my tires by halfway through first gear in a corner I'm going sideways and driving with opposite lock!

The clutch.

They don't play or tolerate any horse play and cost a small fortune to replace. I learned that early in the game. Just thinking of changing the clutch can still send shivers of fear running up and down my spine ending in my wallet

Not me. I've got too much respect for my car, my wallet and myself to drag race.

Now, wheelies on a bike are another story. They require a bit of skill.

I wouldn't be so concerned for the clutch as for the ring/pinion and CVs.

Ring & pinion failure is very common on the NAs. I'm under the impression it seldom fails on the Turbos. Am I wrong?

i ws wonderin becasue then first time i did it i blew the cv on a brand new axle. so i defiantely believe that part, lol. i guess no more dragging from a stand still for me. as for the clutch, i pretty much learned stick on my car and its still teh original unit at 158k with no slippage. i think there stronger than they get credit for. any way to beef up the rear end to handle launches better?

Not to sound pessimistic or anything... but damn, an occassional "spirited" launch should kill any car... that doesn't speak too well for the drivetrain

Pop clutch at 3K rpm.
Control wheel spin with throttle
Replace the clutch/CV joints at some later point at great expense.

Or
Buy a Chevy V8.

wow, porsche drivetrain sounds sad! I have two cars, one '87 951 w/ LSD. It's making 255 RWHP w/ a Strasse chip + shim, my own 3" exhaust, and K&N filter (fliter box eliminated). I havn't taken it to the strip yet, (cause i'm holding out for my other 951 dedicated drag car), but i launch this thing hard all the time. 3000-3500, feather the throttle to control spin. i have enough power at 255 that i can break the tires loose pretty easily. i would also say that the LSD, is saving the drivetrain from certain destruction. I've also went w/ complete Strasse heavier springs, sway bars, coilover, etc... front and back.

The drag car will be set up with an alternative transaxle to handle the drag strip abuse, in the future. I'm just working on the motor now.

The above says it all for me too. The 951 is one beast of a race car. But they were not optimized for stand-still rocket launches. They were bred to race on the track. To make an analogy, it's like trying to make a thoroughbred stallion to do a quarter horse's work with cattle.

Now that can be fun!

3rd gear 60-100 mph tests would be a safer and more accurate "test" of a car's performance. Apparently it's catching on over in Europe as a replacement for 0-60 mph (or 62 mph...)
