Default Techart Sport Chassis on 944 Turbo with Bilstein / Eibach (pictures)

I just bought a Sport Chassis from Techart for my street 951. When opening the kit, i noticed the front shocks are "strange". It looks like it is made for a 944 serie 1 to fit in a strut.

I don't see how it will fit my 951 ??? what do you think ??
There are no mount notice to explain if we have to adapt something or not ?

According to Bilstein website (http://www.bilstein.com/specs.html), here are the shocks refs.

* 944 Turbo
Front : N/A
Rear : B36-2052

* 944 82-86 (except turbo), and 924 84-87
Front : P30-0104
Rear : B36-2052

* Refs on my TechArt kit
Front : P30-0040 (didn't find it on Bilstein website)
Rear : B36-2052

And here are the pics of the kit

It is an insert, you cannot use the factory housing, they are a hair too small to use Bilstein inserts. You will probably have to call Bilstein to get some housings.

The rears appear (I see differing ifo as to which models they should be used on) standard Bilstein HD units. I would have thought that a set of AK1110 and AK1111 fronts and AK37354 for the rear would have been what you would want as that is the coil over motorsport setup.

Thanks Matt,

I sent an email to Bilstein and Techart. I'm waiting for a reply (but not before monday anyway)

I didn't choose the coil over setup because the goal is to have a car for a street use. I already have my genuine Turbo Cup with this motorsport coil over setup (stock) and it's too hard to use on the street imo

Seb,

Those don't look right at all, way too narrow. I think they sent you the wrong ones. Keep us appraised.

I have those very same shocks on my '86 turbo!

They go by the name B6 Sport in europe, in america they're probably called HD's.
The B6 Sport-line is a very nice shock for the street; nowhere as stiff as the full coilover AK's but still a good bit firmer than the standard (Fichtel & Sachs) setup.

The front shocks require open struts that have threads on the top, as you can see from the bronze-colored collar. Since most (if not all) turbos have the sealed struts (no threads) you have two options, if you want to use those inserts:

1. Get used 82-86 944 NA struts. All early NA's (and a few odd 86 models) have rebuildable struts that accept those insert. The NA struts should be identical to at least '86 turbos (don't know if the wheel offset change in '87 changed the front strut assembly) except they don't have the mounts for those nifty brake-cooling shields found on turbos and S2's.

2. Modify your existing struts. This is what I personally did: you have to cut off the top of your strut and weld in a piece of threaded steel pipe (with the correct threads to match the insert collar). If this is done correctly and painted afterwards, the result will be just like a factory rebuildable turbo strut!

Those will work fine on an '86 951 if you get the early strut housings, just like TurboMan said. I had the same set on my '86, and they rock. I like them a lot better than the Konis (its a personal preference).

If I can figure out how to get them to fit on my '87, thats what I will be getting.

Regards,

Let me add to this that if you do get the early strut housings, you will have to do a little modification to where it bolts to the spindle (I tried this before I ended up giving up and switching to 86 "hacksaw" struts).

The topmost bolt hole needs to be "elongated" down a little bit to fit (3-4mm IIRC) as the distance between the bolts is slightly less on a turbo spindle compared to a pre-86 spindle. This means that the top hole will end up looking more like a large rounded square instead of a horizontal slot (I hope that makes sense). Also, the 86 951 spindle is slightly narrower in the mounting area front-to-back than a pre-86 spindle, neccessitating the use of some sort of shim to make up the gap. I think it's a difference of somewhere around 2-3mm. It's been about two years since I messed with that, but after I adapted mine, I decided that it didn't give me a feeling of confidence and I got rid of that set up and went to the 86 strut housings (and "hacksaw" Koni inserts).

With that being said, if you want to use those inserts, I really liked Turboman's method above. That looks very clean and well thought out. Nice job!

Hi Turbo man,

good info.
I bought new shocks for my 944 S2 -91 some time ago. Guess the surprise when the insert was wrong for the strut. The set was exactly the same as for Asarus.

Anybody know if the Bilstein insert will fit into the S2 original F&S strut? I don't know if it's different than the Turbo's mentioned here.
Wouldn't want to cut it open just to find myself totally out of shocks.

Are there any struts fitting the S2 which would accomodate these inserts?

Funny, that the Bilstein web page refer these as the right shocks for almost all 9x4 cars. The rear shocks to go with these (B36-2052) fit like a dream and feel much better (stiffer) than original units.

If these can be made fit it's a good deal. I hope the prices quoted by Matt are SEK / pair!

No F&S struts (S2 with base suspension and Model Jahr 90&91 951 with base suspension (like Asarus')) are threaded at the top.
