Default oil

About to do my first oil change. Not sure when the last time it was done on my car since I just got it so I'm going to just do it. I've read my manual and through posts on here and there's a wide range of opinions. Mine is an 87' 951 with 120K. While it won't be driven daily, it is an all season car in the northeast. The autostore put in the model of the car and it spit out 0w as the oil to use. The guy in the store disputed what the computer said and said I should use 10w/40. Me, already not happy with the disputes went with 20w/50, which was based on a few pretty strong opinioned Porsche folks on the forum. My manual doesn't even say a specific oil type, so is the 20w/50 ok?

Well responding to this thread can open a whole can of worms for sure. What brand 20W/50? That's a key parameter.

I've been using Liquimoly 10W-60 in both of my 944 cars for the past couple of years.

20w/50 is a good oil to use.

You have opened up a thread that is going to get you a plethora of recommendations from weight to brand to syn vs dino, to phos, ad nauseum.

The only 20w/50 in the store was Castrol GTX. There was 15w/40 of another brand but I didn’t get that.

Curious if anyone is using the new Porsche Classic oil specially made for older spec cars?

I’ve always used Brad Penn 20W50 semi-synthetic on my street cars fwiw.

Thinking of buying a can just as a cool display piece in my garage lol

The Porsche oils are just repackaged CASTROL oils in an aluminum tin for 3X the cost.

Is that so, wouldn’t surprise me but where are you getting this information from?

btw I’d still buy one just for the can design.

my understanding is Brad Penn is for the air-cooled 911"s (I use it in my '87 Coupe) but for the 951's you are better off with Mobil 1 0-50 ( what I use in my '89). Yes. the Porsche Classic looks well packaged but initially I had difficulty confirming their Zinc and Phosphorus content (for the air-cooled car), so I'm staying with Brad Penn.

I used 20w50 Dino juice Castro before I switched to 0w40 Mobil one shortly and then settled on 15w50 Mobil 1.

15w50 Mobil one is readily available at Walmart and seems to work as well as 20w50 Dino juice. Thinner oil seems to burn more easily.

Here's my $0.02.
If not driving on the track, you don't need a really heavy oil. Also, I think our cars were designed for oils with higher levels of ZDDP. I'd suggest Mobil1 15w-50, maybe thinned down with 2-3 quarts of Mobil1 0-40.
I use Castrol 20w-50 as a make-up oil for track driving, but it's pretty thick when cold and maybe not the best choice for frequent winter driving.
