Rough Life Wilson - Thread con't

Hello Forum Members,
I'm continuing my 944 build thread on the turbo forum because I'm bound to have issues converting my n/a to boost and figure you guys would most likely be the most concentrated source of help here.

Brief summary: The engine have stock 951 pistons & rods. The tranny is an oem lsd 944S unit. I bought an SDS EFI ECM and harness which uses a MAP sensor. I am so far very impressed with the ecm & harness but the install of magnets into the pulley is very fine tolerance and I had to modify my sensor bracket today. Also was barely able to squeeze all the harness through the oem firewall harness boot, but thanks to thoroughly lubricating the boot's insides with die electric grease & some mechanic's wire, it was successful.

What are your intentions with your car?

Hopefully somone can tune that for you.

Noah, curious to see how you go with the SDS. Happy to be a resource with setup and tuning, done a few similar setups with Megasquirt.

Thank you very much brother, you have already helped answer some critical wiring related questions I had!

Daily driver & autocross. Mountain road adventure sled.
There is a speed shop in the city that has a dyno and performs tuning and is familiar with SDS, so the plan is to limp it over there when I get the car running.

Mounted the snow performance meth pump & tank as low as I could. Will need to make heat shields & debris shield at some point.

While i'm at it, I might as well mount the vacuum pump to help the turbo oil drain from the turbo better (because the angle of the drain isn't great).

So besides the stand alone SDS, I will be using 2 other ecms. The unit on the upper right is the KOSO digital dash which will be for driver/co-driver data awareness (but doesn't manage anything or "input" to engine systems). The unit below that is the electronic boost controller I will be using. I plan on running between 5-10 psi this year and in say 2 years running 15 psi. The unit on the left is the stage 2 meth injection. All 3 ecms that will manage the engine share 1 input; That input is MAP.

SDS is an older system, thankfully they are local. Is that the ECU from Rage2s old car?

Noahs944 06-06-2018 08:56 PM

962 kid,
Yes I wanted to go with a proven system that was locally produced & haven't had luck with piggyback systems in the past. After doing my research SDS appeared perfect for my application and they answered all of my concerns. We discussed injector selection, power expectations and other things like a/c. I liked the fact that it is simpler than other systems and it could be tuned without a laptop if required. I ordered a brand new system & they created a very primitive map for my car, which I'm told should "start & run" once hooked up properly, but then will definitely need to be tuned.

I met a local 911 guy who runs SDS EFI on a couple of his builds & he actually offered to help me perform a basic tune. But the SDS gentleman says dynos can be useful with ignition tuning.

I'm "gun-shy" about this stuff to be honest & have no experience tuning.
I will continue to use my innovative (?) wide band o2 sensor. I also bought an idle air solenoid (which seems almost exactly like the 944 Porsche one) and harness and relays, etc.

I'm so excited! I'll be running the SDS ignition box for tunable ignition. That's what I'm installing tonight...

Ignition box mounted. The clewett 8mm wires work fine but I find 2 of the wires seem extra short (even when using the oem distributor cap). So I didn't have a lot of options because it's recommended not to mount direct to engine.

NCLA951 06-09-2018 12:33 PM

I’d get longer wires or at least heat shielding for those, pretty close to header.

Noahs944 06-10-2018 01:10 PM

Great suggestion NCLA951!

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/rennlis...014a966c1c.jpgLast night buddy & I pulled apart the external wastegate. I was very impressed with the quality. Compared the long & short spring rates (just by feel) and removed the shorter one (which felt stronger in the compressed/working range mode). I am shooting for around 10 psi and with my boost controller I can increase boost but I can't decrease boost unless the spring force is reduced.

Catch can. Closed. Beautiful. I plan on having this in the crank case to vacuum pump to intake circuit. Hmmm, makes me wonder how well it'll work with a boosted intake?

Invaluable circuit diagram from Michael and from the person who made this originally. I followed Michaels advice & kept the oem connector & wire harness to tap into. Is it true that these circuits have already gone through fuses & relays?

Noahs944 06-10-2018 01:33 PM

A lot of people are thinking, Noah: you dummy, you should have just bought a Turbo car. I agree.
A lot of people are wondering why my engine bay piping & intercooler look so unusual... the answer is I bought an ebay turbo kit that in many ways isn't ideal in terms of fitment. For instance the 951 snail is opposite rotation to this one (as in the ports are on the other side). This is why I had a very very difficult time shoehorning it all in. I'm getting closer everyday!

Noahs944 06-10-2018 05:42 PM

My plan is/was to use the standard cheap uranium bosch spark plugs "gapped down" as seems to have overwhelming votes by the boosted 951 crowd... but I never considered problems of incompatibility with the plugs. Could these plugs not be compatible?
