Tming Belt Job 87 turbo
I plan on doing my own timing belt/cam belt/water pump job myself, my question is do you need the tensioning tool for this model if it has the automatic spring tensioners.
Thanks in advance.

I would for peace of mind. The auto tensioners can be way off especially if the job hasn't been done for some time. I did one on an 88 that had been sitting for a couple of years and there was a big difference in tension before cleaning the tensioner and afterwards. So, I'd recommend cleaning the tensioner, and still using the tool to confirm.

Yes I would do the seals too. I replaced my waterpump last fall and didn't do the seals. It's leaking now.
I use the Kricket KR-1 tool to check the belt tension. It's available at NAPA stores for around $10 and once you learn how to use it, it's very consistent.

Change the seals, make sure to do the sleeves as well. The auto tensioner gets close enogh for a used belt but not for a new one. Besides you have to do the BaL. SHAFT BELT ANYWAY. stupid keyboard. I've never tried the kricket but something is better than nothing.
