Default Haltech stand alone - update

I have been getting some feedback from Haltech about their E6X, its their latest standalone system. Nice price and features for a laptop based system but it turns out that it cant use the stock speed/reference sensors as I had hoped. The E6X does have reluctor adapters built in so that it can correctly adapt the sinewave output from the speed & reference sensors, the problem lies in the fact that the 132 teeth of the ring gear is too many for the system to deal with. The software allows up to 250 teeth on a multitooth trigger wheel. However, that is 250 teeth per CAM revolution. The 132 teeth of the 944 ring gear will equate to 264 teeth per cam revolution so the software can't handle it.

This doesn't mean the haltech can't be used in a 944 but it will require an aftermarket trigger wheel (ie 60-2) like most aftermarket ECUs.

Since I discovered the haltech couldnt use the stock speed/ref sensors I have been looking into aftermarket crank trigger setups and discovered CLEWETT Engineering. They sell a kit which provides the crank trigger wheel/bracket/sensor and a blockoff plate for the distributor area for $429. Its all a bolt on setup and looks well designed. Of course they also do a full TEC 3 setup for 944s as well.

No affiliation here, just thought others might be interested in this and I hadn't heard of clewett engineering before today.

Those are nicely done pieces. I've talked to him before at the German Autofest and I wouldn't hesitate to use his trigger if I needed a 60-2 trigger system.

Seems a shame to go through the trouble of a custom trigger and not put something on the cam so that you can get full sequential FI.

I think they have a cam sensor too if you wanted to go sequential. I know I saw one for a 944 somewhere in the last few days.

Performance Developments claims to offer a 24-1 cam trigger in this thread:

I you are not using an auto tensioner you can do something like the one I had made for my car. I drilled and tapped the block to accept the mount. I can move the probe in/out and up/down.

WOW, now that's a really screwed up balance shaft idler setup. You're only supposed to have 0.5mm between the tensioner and the lower balance shaft pulley. Someone didn't know how to do a belt job.

Or it could be that the engine is still on the engine stand at this point and the belts had just been installed.

I could have used your astute eye when the car was completely stripped of wiring and the new Tec3 was installed. But, then again, it did fire on the first try.

Alan:

It's still as clean as an operating room. Be damn proud of that, it shows that you are a true enthusiast!

The link uses the stock triggering mechanism. It has the software to interpret the number of teeth, IIRC.
