Default 18" whls for a track car

This is a combination crosspost of two similar questions I put on the general 944 board and also on the racing board. Still need some help with this:

Im looking at running 18" whls for track use, probably 245/285 on something around an 8.5 frt, 9.5 rear. For those that are running a similar combo, how much of an improvement over 16s" can be expected? Are we talking about a 1/2 second a lap or more like seconds?

Im considering some of the 3pc whls available like the Kinesis SuperCup/RS style, the RH 3.6 C2 Turbo Replicas, or BBS.

The other option is to go with an OEM 1pc whl like the 993 Turbo Twist whl.
I think 8 and 10 inch are the standard widths for the turbo, and 7.5 and 9 are also available? And I also think there are different factory offsets on these wheels for the 993, boxter, and 996 applications, but Im not positive. Anyone using these whls on a 944, and fitment problems?
Im assuming they are heavier than the quality 3pc whls, but anyone know by how much?

Cost, weight, strength, appearance are the decision factors (not necessarily in that order).

Thanks for any insight.

For what it is worth - our track 951 has two sets of 18" wheels, both 8.5" front and 10" rears. The biggest we could fit under the body - given the ET value sthat we have - was sliks and raintires of 235 front and 275 rear size. The sets that we have are Mille Miglia turbo twists and AZEV wheels. Depending on your budget, you might want to go with the full race BBS wheels - we bent the Mille Miglia's out of shape on kerbstones (could fortunately have them re-done).

Comparing tires is difficult - we ran a 17" setup on the 951, and the car was easily faster by a few seconds with the 18" wheels. However, on our S2 racer, we ran 16" wheels with low slicks (210/580), and were 3-4 seconds faster than with the 17" setup - the S2, however, had standard springs so the lower center of gravity with the 16" wheels, and the gearing was better suited to the short and curvy track as a result of the lower tires.

Guess it depends on the setup of your - if it has full-race setup, and more power, then the 18" 's will do....
