NZ951, If you read my second post you'll note the time on and off the dyno. The unit was properly tuned and I saved a lot of time. Chris had already tuned a car with near identical components.
As the person asking the question is in Taiwan he might consider a very good initial program to be a plus. That and someone who will support the product.
I'm sure you picked the Link because of your location, cost and suitability to your needs. Those same reasons directed me to the Tec3. But I also put a high value on support. The best system in the world is worthless if you can't make it run.

Did someone mention support?
Try whitechristopher@earthlink.net My guess is that he will get back to you.

Tom/Alan... from experience, how many man hours do you think installation will take?

That is a tough question I am slow as molasses and I am doing other stuff to my car right now. You have to remove the intake manifold and the crank bolt but not the timing belt if yours do not need attention. Other then that is replacing the wiring harness and little parts depending on what options you want.

Hi & Merry Christmas,
I have this question which I hope I can get
a clear answer.
Now, if we can get a chip burned that is specific
to the engine mods & turbo used, what performance
gain will there be over piggy backs ? Yes, the only
thing I see is the flexibility in altering parameters
when changes are made to the engine but aside
from that what other advantages are there ?
I believe Tony G is making close to 400rwhp & he's
running a Pro M. For racers yes I can understand
but for a street car I'm not convince .

Buddy, its not all about the ability to make HP... but the drivability... not to mention addtional features such as closed loop boost control, knock, seq firing, anti-lag, NOS/IC spray integration, switchable maps... most importantly, improved fuel economy.
I have the ProM in my car and must admit it is a very good product.. but those aging wires, relays in my 17 year old car... is just too much of a hassle.

Hi Songzzz,
Hmmm, looks like my car is in a better
shape than yours. Well as far as features,
yes standalone wins hands down. But
drivablity & fuel economy, I'm not so sure
about that cause if the mapping was done
correctly in the first place, a piggy-back will
just be as good. The problem I see is that
there are too many generic chips that are
not compatible to many of the upgrades that
we do. I think alot of piggy-back users are
either mislead or misinformed. The soul purpose
of the piggy-back besides converting AFM to
MAF is to find tune the mapping that's already
in the chip. That's it nothing more nothing less.
Maybe the SMT 6 can do much more but I'm notsure.

Here is my take on it all. I decided to go stand alone because I plan to keep the car a long time and the factory wiring and ECU is starting to show it's age. I also did all of the ICESHARK wiring upgrades to my car for the same reason. Now as for HP improvement I would say the stand alone's only has the advantage of not having to just alter look up tables on your chip for tuning. If you get a decent PB and chips you will be very close to what stand alone is except if you make a major change with your car you should get your chips redone instead of trying to dial it in with the PB. Now this is all my opinion from what I have come up with doing my research.

If you just drive on the street and get a good piggy back or chip combo it may not be worth the time and cost to go stand alone. However, if you think you will be upgrading in steps then the stand alone starts to make sense.
As far as install time goes you should be able to install a Tec3 in a day. That would include taking time to read the manual. Do read the manual!
In my case it took a bit longer because I removed every wire in the car and started from scratch. Wait, I did leave the fuel level sender wire and the brake light wire.

I'm interested in know how long it takes to fit the Tec 3 system. 1 whole day. Did this include rewiring the system to the car, and fitting the trigger wheel? The Link takes around 4 - 6 hours which includes the removal of the Intake manifold to properely fit the new wiring harness. The Link uses the factory sensors, factory triggers, which appears to save alot of time. The Link comes with a fully terminated harness. Its plug and play. As for which is better, many factors need to be evaluated. System ability, cost, install time, tuning time etc. Do your research here. Look at all the areas, not just the cost.
