I have a 1988 944 turbo and thought it had the 28 pin eprom so when I found a set of Europroducts chips on ebay at a good price, I grabbed them.
Then I Open theDME and guess what...Its a 24 pin DME !!!
the number is 951.618.121.02 TPY 951 MW-01
BOSCH 0 261 200 075
Could this be a lot of my hesitation issues that I have the wrong DME
Is it possible that The factory put some 24 pin DME's in some 88 cars?
The Mfg date on the car is 7/87 so it could be an 88 right at model change over and they used a leftover 24 pin DME.
Anyone want a set of 28 pin chips?

Thanks,
I thought it was OK using the older style DME.
BTW, what would be the harm to run the aftermarket KLR chip
with the stock DME chip ? Would it just remove the overboost protection?

fast951 is correct. Although I've heard of some 88's that have 24 pin DME's I think that's an anomaly. I have an early '88 (July 87 build date) and it has the 28 pin DME (and 24 pin KLR.)

Don't forget that '88 had 28-pin Turbo and 28-pin TurboS as well. I've had to burn custom chips for some people with TurboS cars that had been retrofitted with a 24-pin DME box (the maps are different). But on a non-S car, either 24- or 28-pin DMEs should function identically.

When DMEs were replaced under warranty or at the dealer for that matter they were usually replaced with a remanufactured Bosch unit on an exchange basis. There is no reason to specify 24 or 28 pin e-prom when replacing the entire DME.
I purchased chips for an '87 years ago also expecting the DME to be 24 pin but had a Bosch remanned unit that was previously installed by the dealer.
I simply used the chips I bought and swapped the DME from another car I had. Both ran fine.
IIRC the extra four pins were never put to use anyway but maybe John or Danno can elaborate on that...?
BTW- why don't you just keep the chips and look for someone who'll swap a DME with you....? I should have the one you need....and I'd swap you even if it'd help you out of a jamb....
