So what happens if you leave the T-bars in and run a coilover set up in the rear? What are they perks to taking them out, other then wieght???

Jeremy, aren't they surprisingly heavy? I swear I could do some damage swinging one of them around.

Hi HoBoJoe,
Hey hows the going man ? If you leave the torsion bars
in then you'll be using helper springs but you would have
to re-index the torsion bar. A more serious problem
which I recall reading an article years ago is that if the
preloading of the T bars & coil spring are'nt adjusted
properly, it will cause excessive oscillation which is
difficult to damp out even with custom shock.
Maybe someone can shed some light on this. As for
me, I'm running coilovers but I think for daily driven,
T bars are better suited, less noise is being transmitted
into the cabin

The solution to the T-Bar/ coilover problem that I'm familiar with is having the bars turned down to like 10mm or so, thus rendering them ineffective. I think this might be a more viable alternative than grinding off the splines, however, you must insure the turnings don't leave any stress risers.

Hey J chen, How's the new turbo running??? Numbers yet?

What would be a good spring rate for the street, if i left the t-bars in and re-indexed them? I heard dropping the t-bars requires more modification then just to the rear, such as 800lb springs in the front.. My car will be driven mostly on the street but will see a few DE's this up coming season... A stiff ride doesn't bother me that much, but my girlfriend might complain! I'm looking for some input on a good spring rate all the way around... Thanks guys...

Hi HoBoJoe,
Turbo's fine, no numbers yet though. Waiting for
a new set of chips from Danno. Present one does
not work too well, running too rich.
Back to T the bars. A 75-100lbs helper springs would
do quite nicely with 220-250lbs fronts.

Man, talk about reviving old threads!

I just did mine. To eliminate the torsion bars, you will need to install rear coilovers. Torsion bar removal requires dropping the torsion tube, removing the spring plate covers, pulling out the torsion bars, ideally replacing the spring plate bushings at a minimum, and putting it all back together. Not too terribly difficult, but rather time consuming. Chuck Moreland has a good write-up, do a search using "spring plate bushings". There have been a few threads recently regarding this topic also with good information in them. I'm not sure how to post a link to another thread or I'd do it for you, sorry.

I also recommend replacing the rubber bushings with Delrin to get a more connected feel. This adds some more time but again not real difficult. If you go this route, have the spring plates zinc coated and make sure a use LOTS of grease on the bearings. Do a search for the pros and cons of Delrin.

Hi Guys,
My latest thoughts is to go for upgrade torsion bars instead for
street use. Why, cause by running coilovers your're transferring
all the load & stress to the lower mounting bolt. Besides if you're
running stiffer springs like 400lbs & above the rear will twist more
as the total rear weight is now also transferred to the upper shock
mounts. Unless you have a roll cage installed this will be a problem
for most of us. Oh one more thing, as my Ledas are supplied with
hemi joints, it wears out the lower hemi joints.

Stuff you should include in a t-bar deletion:

1) Proper shocks (NOT rubber bushed) attached to these:

From Racers Edge: http://www.racersedge-inc.com/ShowIt...px?Category=39

2) Delrin or these:

No affiliation, just a happy customer.

For those of you retaining the torsion bars, which is preferable - a coilover shock with a helper spring like the KLA or just an adjustable sport shock like the Koni yellows?

When I bought my car it came with the KLA rear shocks. It rides nice but I don't have anything to compare it to.

Hi Dar,
Yes I do have some of it but for street Spherical Bushings &
Solid Mounts are a no no for me as the road conditions here
is not really that good.
