Porsche Marketing
I'm also posting this in the 911 forum (they might be next): I've had a marketing career for over 25 years and I mostly get it. But why does Pano, (see eBrake news July 25 and eventually the July issue) publish a track time comparison of a 2017 Macan GTS vs. a '87 951? Is Porsche trying to prove they are good at tech advancements? 30 years, OK, wow, you did it, no need to eat your elders. I am unhappy that this article was published, not because the GTS beat the 951 but because I believe it disrespects the history of the development of the 951 and the article is a pure marketing ploy that's unnecessary. Why not publish a comparison of the Macan GTS vs a current competitor?

Glad someone else saw this as unfair.
1. Why didn't they use the 944 Turbo S?
2. Why is there tire smoke from the front wheels of the 951 in the corners? Are the tires that old and hard so as to cause the 951 to lap 10 seconds slower than the Macan?
I think it was a publicity stunt for the two guys in the video. Nothing more. Really unfair.
And is anyone going to buy a Macan because its faster than a 951? The two buyer groups are miles apart.

Totally Agree comparisons are rarely done right to begin with. but this test Was all wrong on so many levels .
Why not compare the 951 with the 718 at least
Macan is a truck the 951 is an icon

After watching the whole video I feel for the $ spent on both rides that the 951 did very well. And the Macan is a nice ride for the family. That said if you were to put the $ from difference of the two price tags back into the 951 to match the price tag of the Macan I think the 951 would be much faster than the Macan. But we all know that.

I'm glad they did use a 951 and I'm happy to see it lose. There has been too much positive press about the 951 recently and I always thought it was our little secret.

That's like Michael Jordan going one to one with Kyrie Irving 30 years adds a lot of pain for anything

Blatant marketing.
Note that they ran a base 951 against a Macan GTS instead of a base Macan.
At the least it should have been a 951s with fresh tires and brake pads. The Macan would still be faster, but not as much.
I'm surprised it wasn't a video "proving" that even an old 911 is faster than anything else in the world.

I've been a 951 guy since I can remember... I don't own a Macan.
I think it was a great video. Seems people are taking themselves too seriously. Everyone knows the 951 was (worse than) stock. Donahue didn't even know what kind or how old the brakes were.
Anyone with a brain understands, put 2017 tech on the 951 (tires, brakes, suspension) even without engine mods, the race is substantially different.
Non-issue. Great video. Great marketing. Not a zero sum game by showing the Macan on the track against a 951. Lighten up!

thanks to all commentary thus far, I am currently in an email exchange with PCA ebrake news and now have a copy of the article in print, written by N. Mayersohn a "sports car" guy, journalist, former deputy editor of the Auto section at the New York Times. Anyhow, I mentioned to ebrake that the comparison is ill advised and certainly Porsche must've understood what the outcome would be given 30 years of tech advances? Why bother with this comparison? At this point they are claiming journalistic integrity. I'm in process of crafting a letter to the editor of Pano.
