Bonnet / hood too heavy for struts?
Hi All
So my 1983 NA, usual worn out hood/bonnet struts, wouldn't hold the bonnet/hood up at all. Replaced these with correct Stabilus units 944 511 351 01 from a reputable supplier but whilst the new ones appeared to hold the bonnet/hood up it would close suddenly (ask me how I know). I agree with the supplier to return for exchange but the replacement set are just the same. The bonnet is standard steel, yes the car has been painted before my ownership and yes it looks thick (where one of the windscreen washers is missing) but are the capabilities of standard struts so marginal that a bit more paint causes them not to work? Anyone else have this problem. Maybe thick paint explains poor mpg......kidding..
Quite keen to get it fixed as it seems everything I try to do to this car is incomplete/unresolved and getting a bit fed up to be honest...

I'd check the hood for Bondo that would be adding additional weight. Stabilus is the good stuff so we normally don't have issues.

OK, spent some time in the catalogs cross referencing the parts numbers.
First off, the part numbers tracking is messy since even the manufacturers use several part numbers to describe the same part, or a slight variant. Here's what I can tell you.
1. You have the correct Porsche part number = 944 511 351 01 per PET.
2. The strut should be Sachs/Stabilus part # SG306001 on the package (not the strut).
3. The "1293BN" marked on your strut is the correct Sachs part number for the Porsche 944 hood lift.
4. Date code 114/16 shows it was recently manufactured.
Based on your initial comments, I'm pretty sure that you have a strut that is weak.
Rather than try to figure out which one (or possibly both) I would return them and either order from a different vendor, or have the original vendor replace them.
Use the SG306001 part number to search on. I have used this part number for all my hood strut replacements, and they work correctly.
I realize that you are not in the US, but try rockauto.com for the struts. Reasonably priced and great service (not affiliated with me). I am sure there are other competent vendors that can provide the SG306001 part.
