Default 87 944 oil cooler question (alighnment)

So I put my oil cooler back on, i have an 87 but i had a old style oprv, i had to take the headers off and noticed they were cracked so will be welding that, my question is how do you know the oil cooler and cooler element is aligned inside? I mean that thick black rubber seal that goes on the block side, how do you know it went in correctly? I tightened it up and aligned the cooler but i have a gut feeling somethings not right and i feel like i should take it out and redo it tomorrow, but it looks closed all the way just not too sure, because it was making a creaking sound while i was tightening it, will the black seal automatically align itself? just really doubting myself, and would rather double check but kinda not so sure.

There is an OPRV alignment tool for this exact reason.

Yes I used that aligning tool that's what I meant by me aligning it, but if feels like the black rubber seal that goes between cooler element and the engine block isn't perfect, that's what I'm trying to say, well I guess I'll just take it apart and see how it looks
