Contour SVT cams on the 3.0 head/block is good for 240-250hp, a little more than the 968.

However, these engines are WAY too tall to fit into a 944 bay.
A 944 engine from crank centerline to intake manifold is maybe 15-16"?
Most modern V6 are going to be 20+.

I looked into the last GM Pushrod V6, the 3.9L made through about 2011? or so, 240hp/240tq, dirt cheap, solid and reliable...only about 15" wide from head to head (!) but 22" from crank to intake.

Yeah, I dunno. It sounds like the OP was saying he got the 3.5 to fit and I'd expect the 3.0 is smalller/shorter but I have no data to support that.

Rocketeer makes a very low profile intake manifold(s) in carbon to fit under the stock hood of a 1st gen miata so...

One of the guys in my local club is building a Rocketeer NB. May have to wander over with a tape measure.
