5.25 Component speakers in rear of my Cab
Needed to change the speakers in the rear of my cab as the ones installed sound terrible. My top has been manual since I got the car and the caps that cover the emergency crank points for the roof always fall out and bug me. So I decided in the interest of slightly better sound and to fill the holes with something functional I would fit 5.25" components into the back installing the midrange speaker in place of the 4 x 6 and the tweeters into the holes where the caps are.
I purchased the Rockford Fosgate PRIME R152-S Good reviews and really cheap at $65 from sonicelectronix.com actually landed to my door in Montreal for about $90.
First thing I did was take apart both sides of the interior and take out the speakers and brackets that hold them in. Both of my brackets were broken at the centre bottom. I worked out a cardboard template that seemed to be the best solution to adapt the mount and preceded to cut the mount and prepare a masonite plate to mount on the bracket and speakers.
Here are some pics:

Next I wanted to keep the look stock so decided I didn't want to use the grills. Instead I decided to drill holes similar to the one already used to expose the rear speaker. So I put some masking tape on and drew a grid to use to guide my drill for the holes and drilled away. After pushed the holes in with a punch. It looks a lot better in person then in the picture below. I had it down on a whit table so it accentuates the difference in the holes I made. In normal light with the speaker behind you can't see a difference.
I needed to enlarge the holes for the tweeters a little. Dremmel to the rescue and a perfect fit was achieved. Here are some pictures of the final part result which I have not yet mounted in the car.
I will take more pics when it is in the car and let you know how it sounds.

now that's a good idea.
with the bazooka tube in the rear and the 6.75 components in the front, i was never dissastisfied with the 4x6's, but this makes me wonder. hmmmmm

Finished it off today. Also installed a replacement back seat as the seat I had had some cracks in it.
Sound is miles better then it was before. Highs are really well defined and the mids are nice as well. Looks really nice. I am happy

I am not sure because the arms to the motor are removed from my car but I think so. Look at the photos above and compare it with your car with the arms. They sound a lot better than the stock so it's worth the effort, Good luck.

Mark,
I'm curious if you had researched using the 5.25" speaker mounts from the M490 8 speaker option for the 968 cabriolets before venturing out to make your own mounts? Had looked at something similar years ago but decided it wasn't worth the effort. Your set up looks great though! I especially like the new holes you made for the speakers.

Thanks for the complement it sounds very decent and look good so I'm happy.

I followed his example and the sound is great. i used the manual lift holes for the tweeters and angled them toward the front. only difference is that i added the speaker covers to the quarter panel so that it matched the front. not the best pic but you kind of see it here.
