Transmission clamping sleeve keeps breaking up.

Transmission clamping sleeve keeps breaking up.
Today it (sleeve that connects transmisson and torque tube) broke for the third time in 5 years and 15000 miles. This can't be normal? What could cause it to break so often, or do I just have a bad mechanic? My car is 944 S2.

Never heard of them breaking. I'd make sure the transmission and engine mounts are intact and in good condition, look for anything amiss in the torque tube. What does your mechanic have to say about this?

He doesn't have a clue so far. The second time it broke was due to a gearbox that got jammed, but nothing wrong with gearbox the first and third time. Maybe there is some unnecessary movement somewhere, which strains the sleeve too much. We'll check the transmission and engine mounts first.

Make sure the transmission is securely bolted to the torque tube.
Maybe loosen the bolts and split the trans from TT and make sure the alignment dowels are present - dowels take the torque load, bolts just hold them together...
I suspect there is some flexing at that joint which is weakining your coupler.

Well, I'd have to look at it in front of me but I guess theoretically, if the rear transmission split bearing bolt on the input shaft were loose, it could cause fore/aft movement of the entire shaft all the way to the clutch.
Major crank end play as well.
But, I'd figure that there is a dowel missing at the rear torque tube-trans bell housing flange and the slight off center (reliant on bolt shoulder) is putting too much stress on the sleeve.
