Angry Transaxle linkage slipping

Hello everyone, I own a '89 2.7 and have been changing the clutch over the past month.
Today I noticed when I was connecting the shift rod to the transmission rod that it is indeed slipping out of position. Demonstrated in these 2 photos:

Understandably so, when sat in the car the gear lever is erratic and random. After a solid 2 hours of research I realised that a rubber dust cover is missing but I doubt that would stop the movement? Any suggestions on what I need to replace?

Kind regards,

Luke

There should be a circlip on the front side of that white plastic block to prevent this happening.

seems like a perfect excuse to get the short shifter mechanism from only944.com

Yup, circlip that holds the plastic bushing in place. N-012-415-1, 15 x 1 mm.
