Default Putting a 2016 Stereo in a 1986 944

Hi guys,

I am thinking about having a professional install a new stereo in my "new" 1986 944. It currently has factory (I think) speakers in the factory locations, and a relatively new Blaupunkt head unit.

It's been a while since I've shopped for car stereo, and boy have things changed! The head units pretty much all look like cheap pieces of crap. Anyone that had a 1987 Alpine or Nakamichi essentially had a home component in a DIN mount head unit. I cannot find anything that even looks remotely close (the Beckers and some Blaupunkts look OK, but they aren't the best sounding units).

Anyhoo, any suggestions for a good head unit and speakers? I know about all of the space restrictions in the front, and I think I'm going to try for maybe 4" separates. For the rear, I'm not sure if my car has the 6x9 space like some 944s apparently do, but there is room in the back. Any suggestions?

To keep some of it old school, I plan to incorporate two a/d/s amps, both solidly built and originally from a 1987 Porsche 944...from back in 1987.

Go search for an Alpine 9835, best radio you can use.
Yes, it's vintage (about 2004), but a lot were installed in Porsches in those days.

You can very easily just drop any single DIN receiver into the console. If you don't need the storage area, I am pretty sure a double DIN would fit. The weak-point is the speakers, not a lot of room for the drivers to move air.

For double-DIN units, be sure you check the depth of the unit you like and the space in your car- some of the double-din units are pretty deep, and the storage area is pretty shallow if I remember correctly.

If you want the best single din currently available, pick up a pioneer 80PRS. It blows the old 9835 out of the water.

You'll find the 1986 chassis did not receive the cutouts for 6.5" rear speakers. They just have the 4"x6" holes. It's certainly possible to add them but I wouldn't feel comfortable cutting out the sheetmetal without a template.

I'm using a Sony head unit (mex-gs610bt) that I have been pretty happy with so far. I dont think that it looks too out of place either? The speakers are Alpines 4x6's all around. Sounds pretty good. Alot better than the previous owners set up *shudder*
