Default Headlight help needed

This is a cross post from the turbo forum as my car is a 951, and that's where I usually post, but as this is a more generic problem, I thought someone here might have some insights to share.

Car sat for a few years, and just got it back on the road after replacing the head and a bunch o' other stuff.

After getting it running, tried the headlights. The headlights come on just fine, but they won't go down again.

Pertinent facts: no fuses are blown, replaced the relay on the back of the motor, cleaned the ground, motor is trying to close the headlights, or so I assume as it gets downright hot if the headlight control switch is in the off position.

Closes just fine manually, so no obstructions. If I pull the fuse and cycle through an open close open manually, replace the fuse and turn the head
Headlights off, it closes automatically, but just once.

When the headlights are turned on, they are positioned an inch too low, but can be adjusted manually.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Dan

Lubricant. That happened to my 86 944 one time years ago. The headlights would not close. I lubricated the moving parts ~~ the "elbow joints" and other parts (after checking all connections and motor functions), and the headlights have worked smoothly ever since. At the time, I used WD-40, but would use something of greater quality today. Good luck.

I recently had the same issue. I cleaned the contact wheel in the headlight motor as per the write up in Clarks Garage here:

http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/elect-21.htm

The writeup actually makes the procedure more complicated than it sounds. Once you have the rubber boots off the motor housing it's a 10 minute job. Also lube the linkage as Nemesis980 suggested while you're in there. I used some spray lithium grease.

You might find the link below helpful as it shows how to check and lubricate the headlight linkage.
