Front Bumper shocks
I have a question about my 84 944's Front bumper. While I was washing it today, I noticed that the bumper is pushed in on the Drivers side than the passengers side. Is there a way I can check to see if the bumper shock is OK? or do I have to replace the shocks?
thanks in advance.........Joel

This came up recently on one of the boards. Somebody had the same problem as you do. The guy hooked up a rope or cable to the side that was in, hooked up to something really solid, backed slowly and it came back out. Problem solved.
If you are nervous about that, or if it doesn't work, the front bumper comes off pretty easy---its held on by two Allen head bolts that you access through the big round holes on the bottom of the bumper. Disconnect the turn signal lights too! Hopefully its not in too far so that you can't get at the bolt on the one side.
With the bumper off you can easily remove the two bolts holding the bumper shock in place and assess the damage, if any.

If the amount that the bumper is pushed in is relatively minor (let's say ... less than 1/4") you could also shim the shock out with a washer or two. It won't protect quite as good as a new shock would, but would save you the $99.14 that a dealer would charge (we just replaced one last weekend).
