Post Help Please

You know when you have a sinking feeling that something wrong might be happening.

I need some advice.

I have just taken in my 1989 944 S2 Cab to a new mechanic that is highly recommended. Only does Porsches etc... Makes me wonder what my old mechanic that "seemed" good was doing.

I have the following two main problems

1. Left front control arm - Needs repair $1142 (canadian)

2. CV joints worn on both inners - $752

Can you guys tell me if these are reasonable prices for the work that needs to get done.

Really need some guidance here
Thanks
S.

You're paying for labor. Rebuilt half shafts (axels and CV joints) are available for under $100.00 US. Try here: http://www.performancemotorcars.com

The same is true for control arm rebuild kits. Try here: http://www.klaindustries.net/

There are of course other sources on the 'Net, so you might want to do a search. Another place to find the control arm kits is eBay. There is a new kit out, and if I recall properly the MSRP is about $65.00. That may seem high compared to the KLA kit, but this one appears to offer more bang for the buck.

Sorry I can't recall the vendor's name or web site. If I find it I'll replay to this thread.

The labor on the drive axles is outrageous... I would say, shop around or do the repairs yourself (the control arms are not hard to change either...)

Thanks guys. I expected a premium at this location, just because of reputation. But wanted to make sure it was reasonable. The labour rate is not all bad...but the time they are allocating to do the jobs may be too much.

The OEM parts is a kick in the *** too.

Thanks again for your input. GREATLY appreciated.

The aluminum control arms ARE in fact rebuildable with one of the kits as long as the arm is not bent or cracked.

Too bad you can't do your own work as you could do this project fairly reasonable.

That has got to be the highest I have ever heard for those items...as stated by others, you can get it done much cheaper, or do it yourself MUCH MUCH cheaper. This is not tough work, and a great way to learn your way around your car.
