0-60 and 1/4 mile times for 1983 944
I recieved a G-tech meter from myGirlfriend for V-day. I figured I'd try this out on my stock 1983 944 with 132,000 on the clock. I was amazed by the results:
0-60.........best of 6.83 seconds with avg. about 7.4 seconds
1/4 mile.....one run at 15.99 sec @ 88.9 MPH
I got these numbers just fooling around last night (on a closed course of course , and my car needs tires right now. Yes, it is completely stock, and never rebuilt. These are much better than any numbers I have ever seen published for a NA 944. I recall 0-60 times of about 8-8.6 seconds and 1/4 miles of 16.5 seconds. Anybody have similar experiences with their cars?

My stock 87 924S (with the same motor as yours) according to Porsche does 0-60 in 8.3 secs. However, Car and Driver tested the 86 924S at 0-60 in 7.5 secs and a 15.7 sec 1/4 mile. The "official" Porsche figure is almost certainly high (ie: slow) as it is for many of their cars.
Another member here (Craig) got his 83 (or 84) 944 down to about 6.8 secs using a G-Tech, although I think he averaged in the 7.0 to 7.2's. Only one thing strikes me as a little odd... I'd expect a slightly higher trap speed and lower QM time with a sub-seven second 0-60.

They say the G-tech is accurate. But who knows? One thing for sure, my speedo is WAY off.....only registers about 52 MPH in 2nd gear at the redline.

That trap speed is pretty dead on. My 91 SHO Taurus (227hp) used to turn 88-90mph 1/4 miles at 15.3-7 at the strip. In comparo my 97 M3 hits about 103 on the g-tech with high 13's in the 1/4.
G-tech trap speeds are probably more accurate than the strip, which uses an averaged speed rather than instantaneous.

As an engineer it is pretty cool to know how the meter works. All of that theory we learned in dynamics class really does have a real world use. It actually integrates up to get speed and distance based on acceleration and time. Very cool indeed. This may sound crazy, but many years ago I tried to make my own G-meter. I finished the circuit board, bought some strain gauges, but never got around to making the accelerometer. It was a fun project, but I finally realized I could have bought one for a lot less money than I would have had in to build one.
