Auto transmission
Does anybody know if a 968 auto transmission will fit in my '83 944? My 2nd gear is out and I figure I can buy a used auto tranny for about the same (or less) than havin' this one rebuilt.
I have a 5-speed manual transmission, and all of the components, from an '85 944. However, everyone I spoke with said it wasn't worth the intensive labor to switch from auto to manual.
I believe the 968's had the sequential-shift transmission? 4-speed?
Does anyone know of a place in the Dallas, TX area that will touch my '83 Porsche/VW transmission? I only found one, and I'd like to check out others.
Thanks,
. . . Steve

hey steve, i just parted out an 83 with a perfectly good auto transmission, $200 and shipping and its yours. its not that tough to replace, but the switch to manual would suck as per labor. let me know what you'd like to do.
thanks,
Michael

You're talking apples and oranges.
You need a vibration damper to replace the clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing.
You need a radiator and associated fluid plumbing for an automatic (the automatic radiator has an integral fluid cooler).
You need a new center console and shifter.
You need the "kick-down" linkage and cables.
Replacing your manual transmission will be much easier and less expensive than converting to an automatic.

Cliff, we're talkin' red apples and green apples
his car is an automatic now so he has the flex damper and the ATF cooling plumbing and auto shifter already
he has a 5 speed he was going to install but is thinking maybe a tip instead

the transaxle is Audi/VW...087 final drive (contains gear fluid) with the extremely popular VW 020 transmission section mated to it (and contains ATF fluid)
yeah...the Audi 5000 and others are almost identical
if it's a 'no upshift' problem it could be the governor which should be able to be removed without pulling the transaxle...sometimes it just needs a good cleaning
the valve body may also need a good cleaning and can likewise be removed while the transaxle remains in place
then a new filter screen and gaskets...yadda, yadda
but what about the info regarding putting a Tip into a 944?
