Post Tranny problem (?). Please help.

My 1989 944S2 with 75K miles has lately developed difficulty getting into second gear, and now first seems to be getting a little worse. It feels like the synchro's are going.

So, do I drive it until terminal then replace the tranny? I've been obsessive about changing tranny oil and checking levels. I put about 2K track miles on it in the last four years and it's the original tranny. Clutch replaced 15K miles ago. Any help appreciated.

If you have a lot of play in the clutch travel, you may just need to adjust the plunger (adjustable steel shaft) that goes from the pedal to the slave cylinder. It is accessible from the inside of the car, although you need to be good at yoga to access it. I think the free travel is supposed to be about 8mm.

My plunger became loose and over time I had more and more pedal travel. In my case, adjusting the plunger made a difference.

My 944S2 has a similar problem. It's slow and difficult to get in to 2nd gear without double clutching, and third gear is better but frequently feels like a there's a soft metal 'catch' when being engaged. Nobody in my area rebuilds Porsche transmissions, so it's time to learn how.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to move this post to the 924/944/951/968 site to try to get more replies.
