Post Speedometer/tripometer gear replacement

Does anyone know what it takes to remove and replace the tripometer gear in the instrument cluster on a 1984 944? Can the instrument cluster be removed without removing the entire dash assembly? I need help. I reset the tripometer while the car was moving--a no-no, and the gear got stripped, I think. I have obtained a new gear, smaller in size than a dime--$60. Wow!

1984 Sunroof operation. I am now an expert in repairing sunroof mechanisms, from the clutch assembly in the motor to the limit switches. A piece of cake. Let me know if you need any advice on fixing the 944 plumbing nightmares. Mine now works better than it ever did. Wow!

Pull the steering wheel and the wiper/turn signal control stalk. Remove the screws for the gage cluster and pull the cluster out as far as possible. Unscrew the speedometer drive cable and disconnect the wire harness. Remove the gage cluster.

Push the speedometer out of the cluster from the back. Use a small flat blade screw driver to open the crimp on the gage bezel. Remove the gage bezel and gage glass. Remove the Hall sending unit and gage movement mounting screws. Pull the mechanical unit from the case. Remove the bad gear and install the replacement. Reassemble the speedometer, put speedometer in gage cluster, reinstall gage cluster, reinstall wiper/turn signal stalk, reinstall steering wheel.
