I think you are better off getting a turbo. The s and s2 motors are hard to get parts for. try the regular 944 board. there is much more traffic there.

You are better off getting another 8v n/a motor for your car, vs. a 944S motor. Biggest difference between the two is the 16v head vs. the 8v head. But I do not think you can just swap heads on these units.

Given the higher chance of greater damage during failures of the timing belt, etc. it is more advisable to stick with a 8v motor. Plus the 944S motor did not have that much more power than the n/a's: it did have the same displacement, at 2.5 liters. The valves for a 16v 944 motor cost $90.00 each, and at 16 of them, well, you do the math: it gets expensive pretty quick!

Now: if you can find a 944S2 engine, (3.0 liter, 208hp), then that's a different story. However, I know there would have to be serious modifications to your engine area to get everything in there properly (ex: my S2's air intake system is located under the nose piece between the headlights: your n/a doesn't even have mounting points for the air intake.) You'll have similar problems fitting a turbo engine into your car as well.

All things considered: I suggest you try to find a good engine from the '89 n/a: it's a 2.7 liter 8V head, and offers almost as much hp as the 944S motor (2.5 16v), and should bolt right up.

Hope that helps clear things up,
-Zoltan.

I would either rebuild or find a good used engine.

hey guys,

having driven identical years of both the 8v and 16v cars, you really won't see much difference - much. my car revs a little quicker, but they pull about the same from down low. where the extra torque and horsepower come into play is in the higher rev range. my car seems really happy around 4 grand, and you definitely feel the difference in engine strengths. i do like the way my cylinder head looks compared to the 8v, seems a little more "porsche". as for parts, i have yet to run into problems hunting things down.

oh yeah, we get way cool 16 Ventiler scripts in places.

but, as everyone knows, the 951 engine is fantastic!

anyhow, no matter what you choose you can't go wrong...it will always be a porsche!!

THe two motors are very different, I own, a Turbo, and NA and an S. THe S is a little much in keeping up, with parts bordering on the S2 and 968 price band.

A properly worked, 8 valve will be easier to keep up, and offer more power to sweat than either the S or even a Turbo.

If your dead set on a NA 8 valve, we have for sale a complete running 8 valve, pre 85.5 motor. We will give you a 3 month warrantee on the entire engine.

700.00 bucks complete. Plus shipping. This motor has not ONE LEAK, has awsome compression, and hearing it run, sounds brand new :-) 70 somethingK on the engine.

Take Care!

S is quite identical to 8v NA.Same body, same breaks etc.Outside there is 16 Ventiler badge (if there is side mouldings).Transmission is different but clutch is the same as 8V has.I can't see much difference when i compare 8V na to S, but i suppose iam so used to 951's power
